XM Escape back to normal

Marlin Taylor is in a Yahoo group I belong to, and he made it clear that after the Hanukkah programming ends, Escape goes back to the way HE wants it to be, not what his bosses told him it should be.

Interesting. Does Mr. Taylor have another job lined up as of ... ohhhhh ... the day AFTER the day after the Hanukkah programming ends?

Well if it's like half the other channels being run by XM programmers it'll go back to "normal for XM" for about 3 weeks before snapping back into Sirius form magically overnight. It's happened to 90's on 9, Pop2k, BPM, and others over the past few months.

All the XM programmers should TAKE A STAND and run thier stream THE WAY THEY RAN IT BEFORE SIRIUS CAME IN!!!! (TOTALLY TAKE CONTROL BACK OVER XM)

Do any of you people have any idea what an employer-employee relationship is? Employee does what employer wants done, period. Employee may try to convince the employer otherwise, but ultimately the employer has the last word. And sabotaging the finished product (which is what breaking format is, on radio) is insubordination. If Taylor is actually saying he's going to do what the original poster said he's going to do, and is dumb enough to post his intentions on the Internet, I'd be surprised to see him still on the Sirius XM payroll when Christmas rolls around. If he's really so committed to a traditional "beautiful music" format (new music for which hasn't been recorded for more than 25 years), he ought to quit and try to peddle his concept to Internet radio or some struggling FM that wants to reach that coveted 75-to-dead demographic.

With Holly, I really liked the way XM programmed it unlike Sirius. Also, Sirius is repeating too much on Holly, same songs by the same artists. How about throw in some other artists. For example, Baby Please Come Home, I've heard Bon Jovi sing it but, not U2. The U2 version is often played more on rock stations when they start to throw in the Christmas music.

A couple of things. He didn't actually post his intentions. He told someone in the group what he was going to do, and the group member who posted (and not just anyone can read Yahoo group messages) made it sound like he had made his bosses back down. It's true that people have been cancelling their XM service over the increased vocals. Escape as it was is one of the most popular channels; I haven't heard any recent results.

Also, a lot of us in the group are younger than 50, including me. True, some of the youngest like the more contemporary approach, but I don't.

By the way, Music Choice's easy listening makes Escape look cutting edge.

Sirius is garbage and XM should take control back!!

Folks...ya gotta remember something....there was no merger! Sirius took over XM. There is no more XM.

All we've got is Sirius programming (in the main) with a few XM labels plastered on.

Repeat...XM is no more, and hasn't been for about a year.

This is only true if you own stock.

A couple of things to remember. XM is not commercial radio where the advertising agencies dictate what is being played. It is a paid service with 130 channels of music, enough for a variety of different taste. The more people in all age ranges that subscribe, the more money coming in. So you have some channels to reach the "75 to dead" audience. They have money to spend and if you don't have anything that appeals to them, they won't subscribe. On non-commercial radio, I play the type of music that is derided in this post. During our fund drive I brought in more money than the guy the night before whose format was more rock. My largest contributor was 85 years old and he contributed more than what a 2 year subscription to XM would cost. I also have listeners in the preferred demographic that the commercial radio stations would like to capture. The second thing to remember is that Marlin Taylor is a pioneer of the format from back in the early days. Not everyone wants to listen to what commercial radio is providing today, that is why I subscribe to XM. If there wasn't the Escape channel, I wouldn't be a subscriber and what Sirius was doing with it, there was a question of if I would renew. I will if Marlin continues the type of programming that was there before the Sirius change. He knows more about the format then any of young management types that almost ruined it.

For those of you who aren't already aware, DirecTV will be dropping the XM programming on 2/10 and replace it with Sonic Tap. Most of the music XM channels are being replaced with comparable channels from Sonic Tap. However, this is not the case with "Escape". Instead of replacing "Escape" with Sonic Tap's "beautiful instrumental" channel, DirecTV will replace channel 820 with the "contemporary instrumental" channel. Looking at Sonic Tap's playlist, the contemporary instrumental format appears to be nothing more than smooth jazz with some new age thrown in. The "beautiful instrumentals" channel isn't exactly the same as "Escape" since it is more than likely strictly instrumentals, but it's much closer in format than the "contemporary instrumentals" channel which will be offered. I hope this is just an error on DirecTV's end and "Escape" will be replaced with the "beautiful instrumentals" channel. I'll be emailing DirecTV to voice my opinion on it, nonetheless.

Yeah, I read about this in the Yahoo group.

A few years ago, I was in a mall that used DMX and they were playing beautiful instrumentals and it was like nothing I had ever heard.

If it hasn't changed since then, it'll make Escape look positively hip if they decide to use it. If they don't, that's just not right.

I emailed DirecTV and inquired why "Escape" wasn't being replaced with a comparable Sonic Tap channel and let them know I would prefer to receive the "beautiful instrumentals" channel as opposed to the "contemporary instrumentals" channel that is tentatively set to replace "Escape". i did receive a couple of emails back from them which actually addressed my concerns, instead of the usual "form letter", generic type of emails one usually receives. I would suggest that any of the DirecTV subscribers who want the "beautiful instrumentals" channel to replace "Escape" to email or call DirecTV and let them know. Might not be do any good, but if enough people email/call and complain, maybe they'll listen. It's worth a shot, anyhow. ;)
