XM High Standards 73

Do others share my sentiment on this issue?

Also, yes.

I liked Schwartz when he was on WQEW. (Never caught him when it was -NEW) Sounding canned is one thing, but what really comes across to me is his pompous talking down to the audience. Rather amazing for a guy who never seems to have anything interesting or worthwhile to say.

And yes, his "dull" music choices don't help matters.

How great it is to see that I am not the lone wolf when it comes to Jonathan Schwartz and XM73. I am thrilled to find this site and intelligent reaction to this arrogant jerk Schwartz.

It absolutely ASTOUNDS me what he is getting away with in programming XM73 and that the management has apparently done not a thing to rein him in. It leaves a giant question mark in my mind: Is management really paying NO attention? Does Schwartz "have something on somebody?" Is Schwartz somebody's brother-in-law? What the hell?

A very astute previous poster here said it excellently when commenting on how XM73 programming absolutely REEKS of arrogance. I have never witnessed such "screw the listener" unbridled arrogance from a radio person in my life. No I don't know Schwartz, have had no encounter with him, etc...just based on what I hear.

XM is missing an ENORMOUS opportunity with its Schwartz Arrogance Blindness. Properly programmed standards would have a great following from a young audience in addition to the older niche'. No freaking way Schwartz is going to alter his elitist (and stupidly obscure and incestuous, in my opinion) programming to serve listeners or XM objectives.

This man needs to be fired NOW and replaced with a true radio person. I have never said that about any radio programmer and I've certainly disagreed with programming before, but I have NEVER encountered this pompous , masturbatory arrogance in any radio programmer before. I'm simply mystified how it continues.

Does anybody have ANY idea why or how? An insider maybe?

PS: Did I mention that the good music on XM73 is repeatedly assaulted by JS, apparently just to show he can? Hardly ever takes more than 10 minutes. Just amazing.

AOL's "Sinatra Style" and Brad Chambers' "Martini in the Morning" stream are excellent examples of what "High Standards" could be....but probably won't be as long as Schwartz is "in the house" and "unrestrained". If nothing else...XM73 should cut back on all the "downers" they play. Who needs "bringdown radio"!

I have absolutely nothing personal against the guy....but I find what he's doing these days extremely hard to take. And again, I liked him....and appreciated him...when I could pick up his shows on QEW.

I have done the Standards format most of my career first at WFTL Fort Lauderdale, then WSOC Charlotte and WBT also in Charlotte. XM 73 leaves me cold and I love the format.

WSAI 1530 in Cincinnati had a great standards format before they tried Oldies on the station. Whoever programmed that station knew what they were doing. 1530 has never been as high in the ratings as it was then.

Even MOR radio had hits and I'm not hearing any on XM 73.

You'd think it wouldn't be that hard. A lot of MOR songs were very big hits that crossed over into top 40. Just search the Billboard MOR Hot 100 through about 1970 and get rid of the dreary songs and clunkers. There are tons of great songs to choose from. Almost everyone knows them, even if they aren’t big fans of the genre. That would make a nice base. Add in some contemporary artists like Buble, Krall, Pizzarelli, Connick etc. Even Rod Stewart, Elvis Costello and Queen Latifa have something to offer.

In fact, they could just go down the hall, take the play list from the "50's on 5" hard drive, and simply delete the early rock stuff. That wouldn't be a bad start.

The main point is, most people listen to XM in the car. That is not a good place to be put to sleep. It brings to mind a new meaning of the term "Bored to death."

Yes it would be very easy to do a fantastic MOR format with what they already have. It just has to be mixed properly.

I grew up listening to top 40 on WKBW Buffalo in the late 50's to mid '60's and they played lots of adult hits.

Some of what they are playing on XM73 could be put into a LP category and mixed into the rotation for spice.

The other thing that makes this format so much fun to do is the really great catalog of love songs. Some of the best that were ever written and performed. This isn't even music for my generation but I love it!

Since the channel is for the older listeners XM probably doesn't give it much attention.
