XM Is a God-Send in Rural Areas

My "real" job involves marketing chemical supplies to farms. I can tell you that almost everyone who lives in those areas who has any disposable income at all is a subscriber because were it not for XM, they would have maybe one or two stations to pick from. Just so the XM company knows, there is a real NEED for XM in those parts of the country. Sometimes this gets overlooked, I think.

And could you tell us what "part" of the country you are in? I know rural America sure can use this service.... oh, don't you think this market enjoys Sirius too? In your statement, " were it not for XM, they would have maybe one or two stations to pick from", they also have the other brand Sirius to choose. Both are great, and actually compliment each other ( I have had both for over 6 years).

Thanks to the suits and bean counters that control most of radio these days, satrad is a Godsend in metro areas as well. Love that XM!

You read my mind. With XM there's no worrying that the formats I enjoy will disappear because of low ratings or aging demos.

As for radio stations talking about being local. They voicetrack evenings weekends and even during the day so how does being local matter?

Some people listen to local stations for the traffic reports. What a waste that is. Most times they will talk about an accident as I'm going though the area and it's all clear!

Actually XM has lost several formats over the years. Off the top of my head I can think of progressive rock, latin jazz, latin rock, neo-soul, reggaeton, world music, African music, Christian rock, and for a brief period heavy metal went away.

Yours voice track on the weekends? Ours around here don't even bother with that, it's just a jukebox with commercials/PSA/stupid HD radio promos.

Rural or city,, I live in Concord california,,Ive got XM and Sirius,, these two sats are like a vitamin ,,you need it everyday! Terrestrial radio needs help,,, Its a punishment to listen to KFRC!!! 3 Sirius and 3 XMs wouldnt go without it!!!!!!!!!!!!! You wont find a better bargain than XM and Sirius @ $12.95 its 44cents a day,,, and with an hour of Wolfman Jack on XM,,, Im sold,,,and Sirius,, Norm N Nite on weekends, wow,,, its hours of vast musical knowledge,,,, Norm N Nite ,,,Cousin Brucie,, Magic Matt,,and JJ Walker,,,,and Pat St John,,,its the ultimate lineup!!!

XM is a Godsend no matter where you are. In most cities I've been in you basically can choose between country, rock, hip hop, or a combination of the three (yikes). At least with XM I can choose from lots of different types of music and even talk. Satrad is awesome and I'll never go back. BTW, I just got my future Mrs. hooked on it by getting her a receiver for her birthday. She loves it.

I agree with all that's been stated below. I have XM in my work truck and I travel extensively. It is truly a godsend for those interesting in news and talk programming. The music channels are also good, but I probably only listen to music to the music about 30 percent of the time and the news/talk channels the other 70. I don't listen to sports. I also have a 2nd receiver in my home. I listen to channel 77 (audio visions) every evening while going to sleep.

I am a big sports fan, and where I live it is nearly impossible to hear sports stations. especcially at night.
So XM (and Sirrus) are great to have, even though at home you can listen to almost any radio station on the Computer.

My area is so rural that I can't get Cable internet access and DSL is yet to be built out to the immediate area. Even at home, its nice to occasionally tune into music that isn't new country, classic rawk, or "hot a/c". It makes living here in Podunk Southeast Arkansas somewhat more livable.

I don't drive but XM is great in rural areas. When I go to my aunts house in the country it is great that I can listen to XM where I don't have access to watch TV or no computer. I can listen to many great channels without being bored. As long as you can pull in a satellite signal you can listen.

I wonder how many folks in rural areas, rebroadcast XM radio on low power FM transmitters to share it with their neighbors. Many rural areas still lack any clear radio service, especially with all the small town radio stations moving to the bigger cities. I know several mountain communities within 75 miles of me, that lack any FM reception, and only heavy static on the AM radio. While I have DSL here in an extremely remote area, the last thing I need to is drag a lap top with me around the ranch as a radio source.

If you live in a rural area Satellite radio is a must have, XM Radio performs better in mountain areas, and tall pine trees than Sirius; do to the low angel of their satellites.
