XM's eastern-serving sat and their terrestrial network seem to be affected by a massive outtage starting early this morning. From what I've heard it's a bum load of software upgrades. Here's in Oklahoma it drops out when driving under trees or nearly anything. Out in the open clear of course it works fine.

Here in northern New Jersey (at home), I'm getting nothing (just a "No Signal" message). I suppose this is a chance to do some DXing.
I was wondering what was goin' on. XM says:
"5/21 Service Degradation
You may be experiencing temporary degraded performance with your XM reception at the present time. XM is aware of the issue and working diligently to resolve it as soon as possible. We anticipate full signal strength will be restored by early Tuesday morning."

Maybe they forgot to change batteries or something...
Of course, since it's a digital signal, the "service deterioration" is a misnomer.
Analog deteriorates, digital just quits.
It could be solar flux, geomagnetic storms, etc.., I wish companies were more informative when such issues arise.
I can't be so cagey when I am in a position to analyze/repair technology, the customer usually wants to know as much as possible
about the problem.

XM Satellite Radio has resumed normal levels of service for customers who experienced outages or significantly degraded service starting yesterday.
The problem occurred during the loading of software to a critical component of the satellite broadcast system, which resulted in a temporary loss of signal from one of the company’s satellites.
After you turn on your XM radio, please allow five to ten minutes to reacquire the XM signal.
XM apologizes for any inconvenience this has caused.

Hopefully XM will learn from this experience! I find it very strange that the entire repeater network takes the signal from just one of the two satellites. That's why the entire repeater network went down (or so it was reported on xmfan.com).
From what I read, a software upgrade didn't work and for some reason this meant they had to perform some sort of manouvre, which required shutting off the transponders. I'm wondering if they had to move XM-1 or XM-2 over to the orbital slot. Supposedly they were in standby in the same slot as XM-4, the one which continued to operate.
