XM not looking so good

XM's subscriber count misses forecast

NEW YORK - XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. reported a year-end subscriber tally Friday that fell short of its earlier forecasts, which had already been lowered twice.

XM, the larger of the nation's two satellite radio broadcasters, said it ended 2006 with 7.63 million subscribers. That was up almost 1.7 million from a year ago but was short of its most recent prediction of 7.7 million to 7.9 million. A year ago, XM was forecasting 9 million subscribers at the end of 2006. It cut its forecast in May and again in July.

[EDIT]
###

Everyone is complaining about how bad terrestrial radio is yet they aren't jumping to satellite as fast as the industry thought. Does terrestrial radio still have some life left in it after all?

I read something yesterday on Foxnews.com saying that there are rumors of XM & Sirius merging in 2007. Perhaps that will be the one and only savior of XM. XM also lost broadcast rights to NASCAR to Sirius this week.

Even though I love my XM radio, personally, I don't think terrestrial radio will ever go the way of rabbit ears.

Here is the link to Fox News for the XM/Sirius merge article:

I have 4 sirius units in personal cars and an xm in a new car just purchased. sirius is by far, much better than xm not only in music, sports, news etc, but the reception is far better than xm

I would disagree 100% I researched Sirius long and hard before I renewed my subscription to XM. Weekend with the inlaws Sirius equipped min van was enough) If you want talk go to Sirius, If you want music, I still want my XM

Nock

Its inevitible that sirius will buy out XM, seeing that Sirius has been playing their cards carefully over the past few years. They've scored alot of exclusives (Stern, Nascar, NFL,) as well as putting out a quality product time and time again

Sirius has a far lower stock valuation and fewer subscribers and invested a ton of money in HooHoo that hasn't paid off for them and they are going to buy out XM? ::)

well xms stock is up today..i love it when radio people are biased against sat radio..it makes me laugh ;D

Sirius grabbed NASCAR rights MONTHS ago. NASCAR is something else that Sirius overpaid for - it's not like NFL or MBA, the same race is on hundreds of AM and FM stations at the same time.

Sirius' market capitalization is higher than XM's by about a billion dollars. It added over a million more subscribers in 2006 than XM added. With the all the articles about a potential merger (NY Times last Sunday, WSJ online yesterday) I would be surprised if something isn't going on.

Let's see, XM has O&A, Oprah, Bob Dylan's brilliant Theme Time Radio Hour, deeper playlists, and superior portable technology. Yeah, Sirius has "everything." Not.

ok..i have both. i love both..can we please stop arguing over which one is better. they are BOTH better than am/fm ;D

I would love to see that as a stockholder and subscriber of both services but I doubt it will happen that way. While Xm's stock is starting to rebound to some degree siri is still in the 3 dollar range where it has been for over a year. The problem with sirius's aquisitions is that they are huge dollar aquisitions that have done something for their subscriber count but havent turned the stock around. The suub revenues havent done that yet and 2007 is supposedly the year that sirius will break even. So having said that they'r enot in any position to aquire Xm and I thik the talk of merger is mostlyMel, being MEL. Wall street loves him and will listen whener he talks as opposed to xm's ceo who the street doesnt really care about. I also think the merger talk was Mel's attempt to move his stock price and it did about a blip. Everyone says tthat there is not room for more than one sat service. WE shall see..........

TowerBuzz - Both companies were cash flow positive in the 4th quarter. As far as cash to do a deal when is the last time a multibillion dollar deal was done on Wall Street for cash? I can't remember one. If there is a deal I would be shocked if it isn't a stock deal.

Jimmy James - I have had people tell me they subscribe to satellite radio for either Howard, NFL, MLB, or commercial free music. I have never spoken to one person who said they subscribed specifically for the programming you listed.

People are choosing XM for deeper playlists and less FM style programming on the music channels, which is one other aspect I mentioned.

Except in the past year XM has cut back many playlists somewhat and Sirius has expanded theirs. Still both are far better than terrestrial radio.

As far as I personally feel........ the only advantage XM has is MLB. XM has nothing else that I'm personally interested in.
