XM Receiver

Ok, I need help.

I've almost decided definitively to go the XM way (over Sirius).

That being said, loving and lovable girlfriend of mine as agreed to pony up the bling for "XMas" (that's officially copyrighted and trademarked by writing it here, so XM--back off! Letters don't scare me!).

So, here's my question: which receiver?

Roady?

The Delphi one?

Or the walkman thing? (I forget the names of these--all I know is cheap, mid, and expensive.)

Anyone had the chance to compare? Preferences?

Johnny Morgan;

The answer depends on your personal preferences. The Roady XT is the least expensive of the newer models, and one of the easiest to install. You'll be up and running in minutes. You'll also want to buy a boombox.
The SkyFi 2 (my personal favorite) can easily be purchased for under $100. Self install is a snap but if you're nervous, get a pro to do it for you. Again, splurge for another $ 100 or so and get the boom box for this unit.
The 'walkman' thing or XM 2Go, comes in several packages, all basically the same. The MyFi is far and away the coolest device on the market. It can be pricey, up to $300 in some places. The MyFi will go anywhere you go. You can record up to five hours of programming or listen live. If you happen to live in an area where there are repeaters, you won't have any problem getting a signal on the MyFi. If you live far from repeaters, say out in the sticks, the SkyFi might be a better choice. In short...it is up to you.

Those were the model names!

So, you prefer the SkyFi2. Benefits/drawbacks? I'm leaning towards that one myself--but the Roady is cheap (<$50 at Wal-mart and Target, I believe).

If the girlfriend is buying get the MyFi. Its fricking awesome. You don't need a boom box as it comes with the little house mounting kit and you can just plug it in and hook it up to your radio by FM frequency or through the audio jacks if you have a reciever.

Also you can program it to scroll the scores of teams you like. (I love this during baseball season.) And if you're into stocks it has a stock ticker.

Where are these repeaters?

Repeaters are boosters (FM signal) that re- transmits the XM signal in the fringe areas of a city or town. The MiFi's are good to have for this while you walk around outside with the earphones on. Because it has a built in antenna. But point or lean it toward the south for steady reception.

I was going to originally get the MyFi with my income tax last year but with other things coming up I settled on the Original SkyFi with a Boombox (about $140 total out the door at Wal-Mart) just to get XM up and running. This was early last year though. It is easy to set up..Find a south-facing window and you are good to go! I just as an experiment hauled the boombox up to Akron on a Stark County (Ohio-Canton Area) Regional Transit Authority Bus. I started getting repeaters around the Belden Village Shopping area North Of Canton and by the time I got to Downtown Akron I had 3-5 bar (5 being the strongest) signal strength on both Satellite and repeaters..especially in the area around Akron Univ. You should love XM Johnny..You wont regret getting it..

Regarding the benefits/drawbacks of the SkyFi 2:

+ You can "rewind" or "pause" content up to 30 minutes.
You can program it to scroll stocks & sports scores.
Easily transportable from car to home.
Bright easy to see display, even in full sun.
Transmit the signal to nearby FM radios, and onto an FM frequency in your
car. Makes installation a snap.
It receives XM, way better than AM or FM!

_ You cannot "record" or save content.
SkyFI boombox eat batteries! Use AC where possible.
Boombox is bulky, no carrying handle, just a "niche" for your hand.
It isn't free,
