XM to broadcast missing NYC. formats on WNYE

Looks like XM is back on FM for a pre-Christmas gift:

XM Satellite Radio, which broadcast country music on WNYE (91.5 FM) in anticipation of the Country Music Association Awards earlier this month, will return to that station for two weeks beginning today with more country music as well as two other formats that are now missing from commercial radio in New York: oldies and alternative rock. It will broadcast oldies through Friday, country from Monday to Dec. 9, and alternative rock from Dec. 12 to 14.

I'll listen to it when their doing the alternative. do you know if they are basically going to use the chanel 56 sqizz channel?

...and I would say that was an excellent ploy since they are only broadcasting NYC's missing formats however there is pratically no publicity advertising it so it would be my guess that it will have little of no affect on the number of new subscribers to XM in the New York area.<P ID="signature">______________

Beg to differ, they are going to hook those listeners that have been missing those formats. Show them how easy it is to get it and watch them sign up, nothing but a big radio commercial for XM. And then their friends tell their freinds and so on and so on! Glad I bought stock when they first went public. Smart move, what city is next?

Most likely they'll use Ethel (47). More FCC friendly (Squizz is uncensored, I believe). Ethel also covers the whole genre (post-Nirvana), while Squizz is more of a niche (hard Alt. only) channel. This is one genre XM does very well BTW. Personally I'm partial to Fred (44, Classic Deep Alternative) and Lucy (54, Alt's Biggest Hits).

The point was that they would gain more subscribers by publicizing what they are doing. Most people dont radomly search the FM dial.

Ethel is uncensored too. They usually leave in the f-bombs. Listen to them play Rage Against The Machine's "Killing In The Name Of" for instance. It'll be interesting to see if any slip by when they put it on FM.
