XM upgrading audio for its music channels

Thumbs up to XM. They deserve credit for working in the issue. I didn't notice better audio this morning, but then again my car has poor acoustics and cheap speakers.

Was this a secret? I had no idea they made changes until I read it on radio-info. I heard no on-air announcements and there is nothing on their Web site. Perhaps they don't want to call attention to the problem by announcing that they're making changes to address it.

I could tell they were at least starting to do something yesterday afternoon. I was listening to the end of AT40 on the 80s on 8 through my stereo speakers. I had to put my head phones on to tell if the channel was in stereo at all. Then I turned on the 70s and knew they were doing something. It seems as they were doing adjustments on alternate songs.

It still has that "brittle" sound in the 4-6 kHz range in my car. After your ears become "adjusted" to it, everything else sounds dull and lifeless. Maybe that's the idea.....

I listened to a few music channels on my home system over the weekend. I didn't notice a big difference, but I’m sure it was not worse than before. I did adjust the bass and treble down a tad and I thought I heard a slight “phasing” effect in treble. Overall, I’m happy to see that XM is working on the quality.

The bass is less muddy, there's less asailing distortion, a little more presence, a couple thousand more hertz at the high end, all subtle improvements, but overall a much less obvious overcompressed signal. Nice improvement.

I have XM and Sirius in My 1991 Chevy Silverado,, By far Sirius seems to have much better less distorted sound!! Ive spent over 600 upgrading to an Alpine stereo amd new speakers installed by Circuit City in Concord,, However XM is much more Powerful signal,, Sirius sounds weak going over the san Francisco bay Bridge ,, XM is real clear and no fading in and out!! On a trip to Bakersfield yesterday ,, I could not listen to Sirius on parts of Int 5 between Concord and Coalinga Calif!!! Any ideas? Kenny in Concord

The phasing effect on the high end and the somewhat brittle sound are my only complaints about XM. Sirius used to really have this problem which influenced my decision to go with XM. Maybe I should have auditioned Sirius again. If XM gets those two problems fixed then I will be happy. I think they need a little higher bitrate.

Big Tracks 49... Thumbs down XM techie guys. The audio sucks compared to the old proccessor. I've heard old Optimod 8000s that sound better. What the hell are they using? Surely someone just doesn't know how to set it... Very thin and tinny... YUCK!
