xM vs. Sirrius:

I have xM, and maybe biased towards, the -x- but, a few observations:

[1] alot of sirrius post-ers are commenting on the xm sat.radio..
(on the sirrius radio message board...hmm )

[2] not a howard fan, so xM was an easy choice right there.

[3] Cost : )

[4] dance radio is Awesome on the X

: ) i luv my xM radio : )

but truthfully which is "better" overall..hmm
i believe xM !!

As a subscriber to both services, the best way to put this is this way...

Both have their advantages and disadvantages... For example, if someone is a football/basketball fan, Sirius is the better option, for a baseball fan, XM's the better choice (i won't put hockey in there because currently, both offer the NHL)... If a person wants FSR or SNR, Xm's the choice, if they don't care, then Sirius is the choice... In terms of portability, both are good if you have a Plug and Play unit as I do with both systems.. That being said, on that end, I like XM better because I have my PAS, while I don't have that option with my Sirius unit... Anywho, as I initially said, its a matter of choice as they both have their advantages and disadvantages.

I also have both services and wouldn't want to do without either. As you said, each have their advantages and disadvantages. I'm also a big dance fan as you mentioned, and I agree, XM's dance channels are better. "BPM" is one of the main reasons I subscribe to XM. Overall, though, I would say that Sirius is more in line with my tastes on most music channels, but XM does have several select ones that I prefer. So I would give the slight edge to Sirius personally, but I love both services and am very happy with both XM and Sirius. Also, XM's new addition of more "hit" based channels on April 17th only makes me like them even more. (I always thought XM's "obscurity" and really deep, odd playlists were its biggest fault. So I'm happy they are adding more mainstream, hit channels soon).
Edited by BRH on 04/14/06 02:31 PM.

Re: xM vs. Sirrius: - Hit Channels New/Old

I have XM, and think its great......but HOLY COW, the current hit channels really repeat themselves a lot. I can't think of a day in the last month where I didn't hear Bon Jovi atleast 4 times on MIX-22. I'm holding my breath that the new channels will be programed better and be less repetative.

Well you only have so many hits.

Re: xM vs. Sirrius: - Hit Channels New/Old

MIX is supposed to be a mix of 90's and today. I'm assuming like "the pulse" on Sirius. But its all Bon Jovi all the time ;).

Is this the reason you're paying $13 a month so you can hear music you can already hear for free on terrestrial radio? ;)

Actually, I do like Lucy...even when some gripe about the seminal hits that were popular for a week, a few weeks, or a couple months, etc. The 90's could improve more (or I could listen more) and add more different artists/genres.

oddly enough, xmfan.com is showing songs listed on the new channels already. Wilco's "Outta Site (Outta Mind)" on Flight 26 is one. How is this possible?

My 2 cents

It all depends on your listening preferences. Sound quality is now very similar,
(XM used to be a lot better) as is reception (Sirius had some problems early on that have been pretty much rectified).

First, is there exclusive programming you can't live without?

If you like Stern, NPR, or the NFL, Sirius is for you.

If you like MLB, Nascar, or Air America Radio, XM wins.

XM tends to be a lot more adventurous musically (especially if your tastes lean toward Alternative Rock or Dance). As a fan of Alternative Rock (both "hit" and obscure) IMHO XM blows Sirius away. But I am told Sirius does a much better job with Country. It all depends on the genre.

Sirius' music channels are generally programmed a lot tighter (more like terrestrial radio) and have more DJ chatter. If your tastes don't go much beyond "The Hits", you might be perfectly happy with Sirius.

Another factor might be what equipment you currently own. (Is your car stereo XM or Sirius ready?) A direct connection to your head unit is much better than going the FM Modulator or cassette adaptor route. Pioneer even has tuners for both.

The best advice would be to give both a good long listen before deciding. Both have a free online trial, which should give you an idea of what each service offers.

Well now I can hear it without 20 minutes of commercials every hour.

Re: xM vs. Sirrius: - Hit Channels New/Old

> i LOVE bpm.xm81..wow, that channel is amazing.
at first the mix shows, i thought were "cheap"
in a sense..just throw on a 4hr mix, and leave it at that..
*BUT* the april 15th/12noon(EST) hour of 90s euro : )
*OMG* this went deep, and played all the fave's : )
i went to the dj's site (jbdj.net)i believe and sent
him a shout of respect...now, i know it is all beat matched
with computers---but end result: it sizzzzled soo much on my
truck's radio : ) i luv it !!

I often ponder: why hasnt either sat.radio company, ever
done a one hit wonder channel...i love my xm radio : )

i usually keep it on, in the truck, and if there is a song
that makes me flip the dial..i will flip as i listen to
pre-set (FM) stations-turning down the volume slightly,
and then "seeing" what is played..and, if i like i tune back
(to my 88.1 FM )....its like picture in picture on the radio.

I often tune to the MLB/NHL channels..just to catch the
scores, while listening to my fm-commercial stations : )

Re: xM vs. Sirrius: - Hit Channels New/Old

Most terrestrial FM stations stopped playing music many years ago.
They start out with music, then run it through thousands of dollars worth of equipment, and come out with something that has a lot of bass and trebble, no midrange, and a constant loud volume level tinkering on the edge of distortion, and send it to the transmitters. I do not know what to call it, but the word "music" does not come to mind. I would rather have digital artifacts than music that is destroyed intentionally, on purpose.
______________

Because the new channels have been up for the last two weeks! Yes, really. XM has been running those channels in test mode since around the first of the month; they're just not available to the average consumer.

As someone who has both services, I will echo the others' sentiments that it depends on what you like. XM has a better mix of music while Sirius sounds more like a traditional radio station. One of my friends swears by Sirius and won't touch XM because he likes the sound of traditional radio. For me, it kind of depends on what I'm doing. If I'm just driving around town, where nothing is further from 10 minutes from my house, XM is better because it gives me more music and less clutter. If I'm taking a longer drive for whatever reason, I usually prefer Sirius because it has some personality and interaction. If I'm sitting around the house during the evening, it depends on how long I'm listening and if I want to hear the personality or just music.

were they....'available' select times, before the launch..
*OF COURSE* it makes sense to test the waters, to make sure
its safe to swim, come launch time : ) but...was there
ever a time, they opened it up, on the 'avg. customer' reciever,
just to 'get 'em -x-cited : )
