XMSirius - Breaking News

Meanwhile terrestrial broadcasters alternate between chasing their tails and shooting themselves in the foot with the HD folly.

More music for us people who embrace the future, too bad testicular..er..terrestrial broadcasters were too stupid to get on the train before it left the station

The Justice Department has approved a merger between Sirius Satellite Radio and rival XM Satellite Radio.

I have 2 XM Radios...i wonder if they'll still work,when they merge ?

Good, I hope they don't mess it up. Now lets see if they deliver on the a la carte services. I would be glad to give up the baseball crap and nascar stuff on XM to lower my bill.

Anybody want to guess when Mel will start raising the fees?
Here's my guess:
You can pay a monthly premium and buy a new radio to get both services.
Then, you can add premuim channels for a slightly higher fee.
Want sports? Just a few dollars more a month and it's yours!

Before you know it, your credit card bill will show $50 a month fee to pay for Mel's annual bonus.

I do have XM in the car and I also get XM through DirecTV in the house. I know that Sirius has a deal with Dish Network. Wonder which sat TV company will get the merged music company?? ???

I have a feeling it'll prolly be package based. On the Dish/DirectTV angle, knowning how cheap charlie at dish is, he'll balk at the cost and use the bandwidth it leaves for HD

I wouldn't count on it. I remember when cable companies offered us the world (including ala cart subscriptions).
Look what happened with that. Companies that make these promises remind me of guys who will say or promise anything to get laid. Once they get what they want we get screwed (and not in a good way).

OF COURSE the merger was approved. This is the United States of Commerce. What big business wants, big business gets!

Agree with Raoul. Just like the bait and switch the cable companies did with the municipalities to get their exclusive franchises, you'll soon see tiered pricing, premium channels and the same old horrible metallic digital sound.

Before everyone starts asking what Mel will do, remember that the FCC still has to approve this, and they may set very difficult conditions.

AND.... several members of congress are demanding all kinds of restrictions on the deal or demanding that the FCC not allow it.
This is far from over.

Far from over, indeed. Both companies will probably go kaplut before the FCC makes a decision on this.

Sweet sweet sirius radio, what a gift you have given me, the humble former radio listener. Don't the mind the coach builders, who thought automobiles wouldn't take off, don't mind the train travelers who thought that airplane travel thing would ever become anything more than a passing fad. Don't mind the old MA bell who thought those mobile phones where nothing more than walkie talkies. Don't mind..................

I'm sure they will have to give up the local stations they carry now, but I hope they introduce the a la carte services. I love me some Big 12 Football, but I can hear it on local radio. I get all the baseball via XM, but I don't listen to it because baseball sucks.

The last time I saw the a-la-carte proposal, it would cost less for the music than either service costs now. I still think migrating to an ad-based system with no subscription would be in their best interest, because it would become another band on radios. I do hope, however, that I can block perverts like Howard Stern and Opie & Anthony.

I hope the FCC turns it down I happen to like direct competition, it only brings out the quality in both competitors. Considerign we don't have much of an FCC only marionettes,it'll pass.

Im also guessing you liked Sunday Blue Laws and Prohibition as well bates ;). The only job the FCC needs to be in charge of is how much power is coming off a stick and if it bleeds into another band, not playing the morality police or stopping new technologies from being widely accepted due to interfering from the idiots at NAB.

sunday blue laws had merit<wink> coming soon in corporate America, more malls open on thanksgiving and at 12 noon christmas day. Go get em Mr.Geiko!

Only problem with ad-based is that it would become 20 minutes of commercials every hour, which is the main reason I went to satellite for most of my commute listening. Hearing commercials for half of the commute doesn't appeal to me.
