Has anyone been tuning in for this. Absolutely amazing. Listening to Van Morrison's Astral Weeks last night in a traffic jam on the Blue Route made everything ok with the world. Could a commerical station like MMR pull this one off?

Amazing to hear Metallica next to Jeff Buckley next to Dr. Dre on this countdown. It makes you realize music is music, not a programing formula.

I have been listening non-stop!!!
Its awesome!!!!
No MMR or YSP or MGK would never even consider doing something like this.

It has been pretty amazing.

Back in the mid-90's, Michael Tearson conceptualized a long-form programming special called WMMR's A-Z. It basically juxtaposed the playlists of their humble beginnings, through the present day. So, you could hear every core artist from 1968-1993 or '94. I think they ran it three years in a row until Joe Bonodanna left the station for Phoenix, and Sam the Milkman took over and overhauled the station. It was a three week investment on the part of the station, and every year it got better. I think Tearson was the Music Director at the point at WMMR. That was radio at it's finest. I do think WMMR could still pull it off today if they leaned heavily on the Wow factor.

Yes at times WMMR seems to go back to its roots, (Archives weekend etc.)
So maybe they could pull something like this out..
YSP forget it, they are so corporate and straight, It is so nerving everytime they discuss something on the station its backed with " And its all brought to you by (fill in the blank)"

That doesn't surprise me. Even back in 1972, when WYSP went "AOR", they were still very formulaic with a very tight playlist. Very corporate. Their biggest innovation at the time was playing windchimes behind the announcers, the way some stations play a music bed under announcer breaks. I never listen to WYSP, having even abandoning the Stern show last year. I don't imagine they are anymore groundbreaking now than they were in 1972. I know people hold them up as THE succesful radio station because they garner more ratings than WMMR. This will probably change after January without the Stern factor. I still think that in terms of Rock music, WMMR could once again be the heartbeat of Philadelphia's rock music scene. There was a time when WMMR was almost like a person, not just a radio station. A persona that WYSP never had. It's a shame WMMR has lost that warmth and local flavor. If the bod squad is all they have to offer, they are in deep trouble.

WXPN is the premiere radio station! Not just in the Philly area but the world!

I must say, I happend to roal twoC 120's of XPN with Dan Reed (I think is his name? I forget his last name now....) on oct 10 starting at around 3:30 PM. Amazing stuff it was. Again, I marbel at WXPN's on-air sound.... Little compression, the way it should be! IMO.
______________

Re: Philly Rockers

I have always liked WMMR as the Philly rocker of choice. WYSP to me seems either heavy talkwise, or there playlist is verry narow.
WMGK is well surved for those that dig the classic rock seen in Philly. However WMMR I think has always tried to please those of us that like rocken from the classics to today. Sometimes they are more corprit driven then others, but the fact that they are willing at times to go back to there routes says something.

Yes,
I've been listening all along, and just love that we have a station like XPN. They have been playing Zeppelin songs I havn't heard in years. It make me mad how there are soooo many great songs by a group like Led Zeppelin, but you'll only ever hear 1 or 2 songs by them being played 10,000 times on MGK, and MMR,
Here is my top 10 I sent in, they have played soem of them already:

ED's Top 10
1. The Beatles/ Rubber Soul

2. Crosby, Stills and Nash/ Crosby, Stills and Nash

3. Pink Floyd/ The Wall

4. Paul Simon/ Graceland

5. Peter Gabriel/ So

6. The Who/ Who’s Next

7. Jeff Buckley/ Grace

8. The Jayhawks/ Tomorrow the Green Grass

9. Crowded House/ Woodface

10.Weezer/ Weezer
Edited by EJ3 on 10/15/05 11:15 PM.

XPN: Free To Play What Sounds Good

I've said it before...with no pressure to be ARB-competitive or make a profit, XPN simply rares back and plays what sounds good. They put together groups, individuals, genres and sounds that just plain work well together.

Could a commercial FM do the same, be competitive, score ratings and make money doing what XPN does? I'd like to think so, but, many on this board think that Triple-A or A/A is a dying format.

I'd like to, politely, disagree.
