Ok now the triangle has 3 sports radio stations. What gives here. I don't see how 3 sports talk stations are going to make it in Raleigh.
Maybe I was reading the rateings wrongly but 850 has not been placing that high, and WTSB is pretty low also.
Thoughts?

850 is on the heels of RDU Men 25-54. Only a fraction behind in the Summer book. That's impressive for an AM with a signal issue at night!
______________

I hear this deal has legendary morning man Pat Patterson on the bricks! Spoke to Pat briefly at a golf tournament in Cary on Monday. Didn't get the whole story. Pat looked good (although the blazer was the same one he wore at WKIX in the 70s. :~)

Actually, it's four if you count the fact that Triangle Sports Talk broadcasts on both 1090 and 1490. But I agree with you that flipping WDNC to sports doesn't make sense, especially since both stations are owned by the same company. On top of that, sports should've been moved to WDNZ with its weak signal. But, hey, that's just the way radio is. After all, with the way things are these days, logic doesn't always apply in this industry, particularly when it comes to format changes. At least both stations are affiliated with separate networks.

Most sports stations also do good in sales if they have alot of local programming. ESPN Radio or Sporting News or Fox Sports Radio by it self do not sale. Its the local shows.
______________

Wouldn't it make SOME sense to move one of those AM's to standards...or some other older-targetted music format? I know standards, 'real' oldies, and the like are not very trendy in our industry these days. However, it would have to be more productive than duplicating three or four other stations.

It is virtually impossible for a second sports station in markets this size to make much money. Particularly if they try to do all local programming. The format is very expensive - almost as expensive as local news-talk.

Syndicated programming is a must - but to be honest, it doesn't get much better than the ESPN product. All of the others are "also rans". Problem with the ESPN, FOX, and Sporting News Radio product is they think of themselves as full time stations rather tna independent programs - too much talk and cross promotion about other shows. Makes it real hard to pick up one daypart without confusing the listeners.

Best money to be made by the second station comes from sports teams that will pay for play by play coverage. Any station that is paying a rights fee is way out of the loop!

WDNZ has a great signal with its nice low dial position...and propigates well at night even with 52 watts..i had no issues hearing them in north raleigh...I think its a waste of frequency though...would be nice to have the old WLLE back
