X's and O's with the annoying

I didn't want to add this to the programming change thread because it's a different subject altogether. I'm just curious as to whether or not I'm the only one that has had just about enough of LeCharles Bentley besides me? For the first time on the drive home tonight I switched over to the FAN. I didn't find it genius level or anything, but at least I could understand what they were saying, as opposed to not being able to comprehend much of what was going on between all of the cackling going on with the Pros. I like Je'Rod and his laid back style and his reasonableness, but Bentley is killing me with he insistence on trying to not only sound like he has a point, but that it's indisputable, and that his presentation is just hilarious. Every time I listen to this show and they go off on one of their laughing tangents, I feel like I walked into a room where everyone is laughing and I don't know what the joke is. It's not that I don't get it, it's just that it's usually not funny...or at least, not that funny.

Look, I guess I'm a nit of a snob. I've listened to 660 The FAN out of NY for about two decades whenever I could pick it up, which was a lot when I lived in new England, and still pretty regularly here at night. Even as a Red Sox fan, 660 was just fantastic to listen to. It's a high standard to have to rise up to, but this show, and specifically this host, doesn't even come close. Maybe I'm wrong and its just a personal preference thing, but I have to suspect that KNR is going to get slaughtered in this time slot as long as Bentley is on the air.

KNR usually gets killed in this slot anyway due to...

1. Tribe or Cavs games on WTAM (and on non-game nights Bob Frantz, who talks about anything and everything, including sports when something big goes down).

2. 850 powering down at sunset (going from 50,000 watts during the day to 4,700 at night with a funky pattern)

And now you can add in 92.3 The Fan's evening host Ken Carman, who so far is solid and steady.

The whole "Xs and Os" motif is that Bentley and Cherry are a couple of former football players just sitting down and shooting the $#!+.

Like any other show, it's an acquired taste.

LeCharles is beloved in Cleveland, having played for local high school powerhouse St. Ignatius, OSU, and would have played for the Browns if injuries didn't take their toll, so he's good as gold with local sports fans.

All valid points, and I get the sports motif and the local hero angle, but one day you have to wake up and do a job well instead of just resting on your laurels. I really want to like the guy, I generally like linemen turned commentators, but I've noticed that he's become increasingly negative over the past couple of months, and it seems like Je'Rod is doing the best he can to keep the show centered, but Benteley is out of control.

I dipped into Xs and Os on the way home tonight, and thought this very same thought:

They did this for about 2-3 minutes tonight, and I had absolutely no idea what they were laughing about.

Look, I'm fine with even "inside jokes" that somehow manage to bring the listener into the tent. But 3 minutes of unexplained laughter? OK, maybe it was 2 minutes or even one. It just felt like three. It was enough to dispatch listeners straight to Ken Carman, or Bob Frantz, or whatever was competition that night.

The thing is...I LIKE the concept of Xs and Os and generally "get" LeCharles and Je'Rod (and like Dave D. when he chimes in).

The show's biggest problem is one of WKNR's biggest problems, especially now with in-format competition - WKNR has never had a true, strong program director to adjust this stuff.

In his sleep, Andy Roth could deal with something like this and steer the show. But WKNR has no equivalent of Andy Roth. Who's PD now, anyway? Jason Gibbs?

WKNR's PD has NEVER had any actual on-air control of programming. The balls are set into motion by CK, period. And now that those balls are going to be thrown up in the air again, it's CK's move.

Jason Gibbs (a promtions guy/producer by trade) is in fact the KNR PD (technically Assistant Program Director), promoted to the post after Aaron Goldhammer's infamous tenure in the same role (As Rizzo used to call him "@$$ PD").

But as you said, it's in name only. Karmazin calls the shots.

Wait until the September PPM is released - those laughs will turn to tears...

Bently is awful. Brohammered nails it. The over exagerated pronunciations are worse than nails on a chaulkboard. The indisputable air is annoying also. Not good radio. When the dealership pulls his free car he's gone.
He should be the one putting his name on a car dealership in Columbus and selling cars to the buckeye faithful down there.

I guess I nailed it. lol.

I was really trying to be polite in my original post. I thought that it had sunk into compete unprofessionalism because of LeCharles, and that Cherry was doing his best to keep the ship afloat.

You did. Bently's ego sank him. Part of the entitlement thing with ex jocks.

Cherry is good on air. He has the brains to make a run at radio/tv.
