I will be passing down through the area in the coming weeks and wondering how Y-102.9 sounds:

-What jingle package do they have?

-Are the personalities upbeat and fit in with the music?

-Does the station sound good as a whole--fresher than WTRG last year?

All comments will help. Since it's a fairly new radio station, I'm curious to check it out while there on business.

Give us a listen, and then you decide.

We've got a big playlist of great music from 64-78.
Motown, Beatles, Doors, CCR, KC & Sunshine Band, Allman Brothers...
It's not your Daddy's oldies station!

The Jingles are from Thompson Creative, "Way Cool".

"Live" DJs 6a-7p and 6a-mdn on weekends.

Let us know what YOU think.

I've been listening to it since I moved here back in February, and I think it's a great station. I've heard some songs that I haven't heard on radio in years, for example, "Evil Woman" by ELO. NOBODY in Indianapolis (where I'm from)had played that song in years, that I know of. There's been several others that I've noticed, as well. I do wish they had an evening jock, maybe even a nighttime request show, as I tend to get bored with jockless presentations. But that's my only complaint.

Technically speaking Bill, if one was 18 in 1964 one WOULD be a daddy...or even granddaddy, and would be 59 years of age. 18 in 1970? 53. 18 in 1978? 45.

Couldn't resist the math problem :)

Hence the reason oldies is a 35-64 format (core 45-54). Anyone, I don't care what level of experience you have, that tries to hold oldies, traditonal or not (60s/70s) to 24-54 TODAY, 2005, will fail.

Here's something interesting. WRSN has it's highest number of 50plus listeners in it's 10 year history. WHAT? A soft AC? That's right SUNNY...you are now an oldies station.

WRSN recently dropped it's Motown Monday and Lunchtime at the Oldies. Yes, both were AC/Oldies fare in the late 80s, which morphed into, you guessed it, OLDIES. Those features are certainly not wise in 2005 to reach 35-44. Motown doesn't test well enough in the metro to do a Motown Monday, hence the reason WTRG dropped MM in 2003. Morphing WTRG into WRSN hasn't worked.

WRSN should be an 80s/90s and Now AC/HAC. Simple as that. THEN a 70s feature on the weekend would standout and be special. Yes 80s dont test as well as years past, but like JACK there are gems that "research" has overlooked for years. And there's plenty of 90s material to choose from. Not to mention we're now half way thru the decade. Plenty of recurrents.

I've listened and I've decided. These songs need to be pulled from every radio station, every grocery store, every restaurant, etc. and put into a vault for the next 25 years, (I'll be dead by then). When there is so much excellent new music why do people continue to listen to the same recycled junk??? At 54 years old, I'd much rather listen to Howie Day or Marc Broussard than The Four Seasons or Creedence Clearwater.

Repackage it how you will, at the end of the day it's the same tired, tired, tired product.

"I'd much rather listen to Howie Day or Marc Broussard"

WHO???

Radio formats, even JACK, are targeted to the MASSES, not the eclectic listener. Just like stations are processed for a GM Delco car radio, not a home Bose surround system.

Furthermore, radio formats are such as to attract the most listeners so they can in turn hear the commercials the advertisers pay for. THAT's the tried and true of it. Radio is, ultimately, NOT about the listener. Sad, but true.

I'll use oldies since that's the thread. Oldies have been around for 40-50 years. It's the soundtrack of the Boomer generation, which is the largest percentage of the population. OLDIES are everywhere; radio, tv, movies. Why? Familiar and in some cases, inexpensive to use. EVERYONE knows them. They're like an old friend...for most. Again, targeting the memory banks. And OLDIES are feel good records. NO malicious lyrics and what was considered racy then is less than mild by today's standards.
______________

Isn't ironic, then, that if one compares Billboards Top 100 selling albums with the most common radio format playlists that there is a relatively small overlap between those two universes. Howie Day and Marc Broussard probably sold more CD's in the last year than Creedence or Three Dog Night have in the last ten.

Radio is programmed for the same masses as reality TV. Sad, but a reflection of the laziness of our society.

One of my neighbors had 102.9 on for a deck party Saturday night and I was surprised how many people knew about the station and seemed to really like it. As described above mostly 40 to 50 somethings. Personally I think that era is the best music and I like the fact they have a fresher presentation. I just hope they can bring in the advertisers Clear Channel apparently could not.

WTRG HAD the numbers. Sales had a lot of turnover, more than usual. I believe WTRG had 4, that's right 4 sales people assigned to the station. Only one was a seasoned pro and of course he was carrying the brunt. You don't sell numbers with oldies, you sell lifestyle. It's not hard.
______________
