Y100 New Logo

Beats their last logo....in fact, it looks a lot like their original one from 1973 which was so far ahead of its time....I don't know a link to it, so you'll have to trust me. I never cared for the "Dolphin" logo, but I'll likely be flamed for that....IMO it looks like a child drew it, with the help of a ruler.

I didn't quite "word" that post of mine like I should have....I meant to say that the new logo is nice and looks a bit like their original one in 1973, which I cannot seem to find anywhere online. The 1973 logo was far ahead of its time. A few months later came the dolphin one, which seems to be most associated with Y's heyday.

The dolphin logo on the tribute site was their 3rd. The second was a logo (shown on their top 30 surveys) which (I think) had not only a dolphin, but tried to actually incorporate the call letters in the logo! Something like WHYI00 ....

The beauty of the dolphin logo is it made you think of Miami without saying it. The new logo could be used anywhere other than the fact it has Miami on it. Technically 100.7 is licensed to Fort Lauderdale.

Does anyone remember the first call letters used by Y-100? It was not WHYI. I think they might have used the calls for a day or two.

Wasn't it WLQY? Those have been parked on AM 1320 for years.

Definitely WLQY, and maybe for 3 months. I think I read that the owner or PD wanted to call it Lucky 100, and the DJ staff objected. Not sure of how it went down.

Any link to the original 1973 Y100 logo?

[Can anyone imagine this thread going this far?] :)

Music surveys and logos can be found here: http://musicsurveys.net/

The "Y100" dolphin logo was actually second, based on the surveys from early to mid 1974....the "WHY100" logo was tried out for a while in 1974 by consultant John Rook, but Tanner and Robert W. Walker reverted it to "Y100" when John Rook left the station soon after.

My bad, then, on the WHYI00 logo....

If you go to the site listed above, you'll see a song that was a hit almost 7 years earlier, on Y's first survey.....(Don't count "Monster Mash," as it was re-released in '73.) It sounded IMO as if it was an early "Jack", "playing what we want." ;)

Yes WLQY is correct!

BTW prior to that the calls were WMJR with studios and transmitter at Oakland Park Blvd and Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale.

blah, blah, blah, where can I get a new sticker and t-shirt?

Back in the 80s somebody did an advertising study, on logos, in the state of Florida, and that dolphin logo was one of the most recognized logos in the state.

This could be an urban myth, but I had *heard* that WMYQ had complained to some agency of the government that WLQY sounded too similar to their callsign.
As and aging fellow who has not listened to the station in quite a while, I have to ask: are they still doing the same thing, I mean appealing to the same demo?
I kind of like how the Y is made from three triangles not quite meeting.

It isn't a myth. WMYQ/Bartell Broadcasting did raise a stink at the closeness in call letters. Y100s Demo target has changed over the years. It's advertising dollar demograph related.

This just in as to the reason for the change of the logo:
Secret negotiations between Y-100's beloved mascot of more than a third of a century and representatives of Power 96's marketing department less than a week prior to her being found floating in her tank had been discovered but were not made public. Against her family's wishes, a recent autopsy has revealed the presence of a lethal dose of barbiturates in her bloodstream, enough to interfere with her breathing. Her vetrinarian has declined to comment from an unknown retreat.
