Y100 Returning to Philly Airwaves? LA Reid Back in Town?

D

A good record label friend told me she ran into him at a station this week.

LA was one of the original Y100 jocks from the mid 90's, maybe 94-98 or so. I'm trying not to get excited but could this mean a return of Y100 in some form or another? I know he went to DC and then California I think, but if he is back in town one can only speculate what this might mean or where he might end up.
And what about the rest of the old staff? Obviously Preston & Steve are locked up but what about Lisa Barrigan, Josh and Mark Summers? Those were the glory days of Y100! If the return of Y100 is only wishful thinking maybe Q102 is bringing LA Reid in to replace Chio? I seem to remember LA was coming to Q102 a few years ago for afternoons and then ended up staying in California for some reason. Or, could it be that Ben is thinking about putting jocks on?

Last I heard Josh was in Denver and Lisa Barrigan was in Seattle or Portland. I lost track of Mark Summers and Bret and obviously Barsky and Kim Douglas are here in town already. Also worth noting is that Chuck Tisa, the old Y100 Music Dir. who was most recently PD at Wired 965 is available right now too!

If anybody has any info, please let us all know!

He's gone by Matthew Reid in his past couple gigs.

It wouldn't surprise me if he was in the running for mornings on Q, but to call this the beginning of a Y100 comeback seems a bit far-fetched. It's been a long time since any of the names you mentioned were associated with Y100.

On a side note, the alternative station in Louisville, Ky. WLRS was just given a simulcast partner so it would have full market coverage on 2 FM stations, according to R&R today. The owner - Radio One.

And Radio One couldn't keep an alternative rock radio station in Philadelphia?

Lisa Berigan is now in Chicago, doing middays at 101.9FM The Mix. (www.wtmx.com).

As for L.A./Matthew Reid, most of his experience has actually been at CHR, which doesn't exactly suggest a return of Y100.

I have good reason to think that come the New Year either WRDW-FM (Wired 96.5) or WSNI-FM (Sunny 104.5) will flip to an alternative rock format and hire former Y100 Talent and everybody at Y100Rocks. If they do they will keep the online stream commercial free and uncensored.

May I ask what your good reason to think that is beside it being blind hope?
______________

Re: Reasons why Wired 96.5 should flip to alternative

Reasons why come the New Year Wired 96.5 WRDW-FM should flip to an alternative rock format

1. Wired 96.5 is experiencing sinking ratings and shares. It is currently one of the lowest rated stations on the Philly FM Dial.
2. Howard Stern will be gone which means a better chance to steal audience.
3. Wired 96.5 have let go many staff and are letting the public program the radio station with user submitted play lists. Wired calls this “pod casting”. See link: http://www.wired965.com/contest_wiredpodcast.php
4. There is now only one full time current rock station in Philadelphia (WMMR). No station is serving the huge modern rock audience in Philadelphia. Huge concerts sell out with little to no promotion from the radio stations. Wired 96.5 competes with three other stations. NO COMPETITION FOR ALT ROCK IN PHILLY.
5. The demand is there and the time is right. Many former Y100 Employees and volunteers at Y100Rocks are available.
6. Wired 96.5 employs so many former faces at Y100 from the GM down.
7. Beasley already has a dance format on HD. Why not make their main format alt rock and continue to broadcast the current format and the dance format on HD Radio and online.

Is that reason enough?

Free free to add reasons why or why not Wired 96.5 should flip.

Oh, well maybe they're bringing back the "original" Y100, the one that debuted to fill the hole left by Eagle 106. (Man, that would piss off a lot of board posters, wouldn't it?!)

I guess it depends on how well WLRS performs in the demo over there in Louisville (vs. how well WPLY performed here in Philly). Kinda apples & oranges...and without the books, it would be extremely difficult to make sense of it anyway.

Of course, Radio One could have obtained a partner-signal for WLRS so that it blankets a larger area just in time for a flip to Urban! LOL.

I still miss having Y100 (God knows, I listened to it more than I could ever stomach WMMR or WYSP) but this idea that it's coming back somehow is just insane. Even more hilarious is that a money-hungry company like Clear Channel would dump a cash machine like Sunny to do it (and based on meaningless 12+ numbers, no less!)

What is that good reason? Sunny is EXTREMLY profitable and costs nothing to run. So CC would like to put on an expensive format which has already failed in the market... thats a genius business move. Obviously one of the many that has made Clear Channel the multi billion corporation that it is today.

As for Wired. Yeah it may happen. But its also a possibility they just go straight out Top 40-CHR and try and go head to head with Q instead of trying to out Urban them.

Just get a fricking Sat. radio and stop whining.

OMG, yes...with a playlist that includes:
Meat Loaf-I'd Do Anything for Love
Billy Joel-River of Dreams
Boy Krazy-That's What Love Can Do (about every hour and a half I think)
Journey-Lights

All played by Barsky and Bret Hamilton, of course.

Perfect! Perfect!!!

Makes about as much sense as resurrecting the later-day Y-100.

What station did your friend see him at? Was it Wired 96.5?

Since my post, I've heard from a whole bunch of people who also saw L.A. Reid in town over the past two weeks at a few different stations. For some reason since my post people think I'm the Art Bell of L.A. Reid sightings lol. A couple of the "sightings" sounded like a guy visiting a friend, but in my humble estimation there are probably 3 solid "he was being ushered around the station by upper management and in meetings with them for long periods of time."

Interestingly enough I also got an email from L.A. or Matthew as he is going by these days (his real name is probably Clarence Werthenheimer, right?) who asked who/where I had heard about this but wouldn't confirm or deny it.

The only known job open is the PD at Wired. That's why the speculation is on that station I think. That and the old Y100 GM Lynn Bruder being the GM at Wired. Now that Chio is leaving Q-102, it makes sense that he would be talking to them or maybe, BenFM is either adding djs or flipping formats themselves after all is "Jack" working anywhere?

I also heard from someone that "Josh" who worked at Y100 during that time too was in town recently.

Oh and while I'm on the subject of old Y100 people, does anybody know where Lucy St. James, Sherry Lee Stevens or Chad Brewski are? Also, Sean Caldwell who does voice over work is he at a station too or just doing liners and stuff?
