Y102.3 in Augusta

How is this station sounding? They've been on the air for almost a year. I went to stream it online but it sounds like after midnight they run Premium Choice, so blah. Last I heard, the music mix was pretty good.

Looks like mornings are syndicated (from where?) and nights are voicetracked from Dallas I believe. Not sure about mid-days and afternoons but they look to be local. They got a 3 share 12+ FA10...less than a point behind HD98.3, looks like they've possibly dented them, I think this station's ability was underestimated. They're beating WCHZ.

The only thing...that logo...once again, it looks like it would fit a classical station. Not a CHR!

THANKS FOR POSTING THIS ABOUT Y-102.3! I tried asking this same question on how the station is doing like 6 months ago and no one responded. You actually have a little more info on the station as I haven't listened much lately and I also no longer live in Augusta. Anyway...hopefully we will both get more feedback on the current Augusta CHR war :) Take Care!

Yeah, there's very little talk about Augusta on here. If there is one format Clear Channel can pull off, it's CHR. I've heard very little of 102.3 recently, but they must be doing a good job, seeing the ratings. Looks like if they put enough in to it, they could get ahead of HD98.3 (which is less than impressive). This was a smart move!

BTW, I find it interesting that Augusta has a smooth jazz station when most don't (WAEG 92.3). I'm surprised they don't use 92.3 to simulcast 96.9.

Bobby Bones, out of Austin, TX, is in AM drive and it sounds very "tinny" to me; almost as if it were being skyped in.

Music is very very very (almost too) current, a bit of a rhythmic lean, which probably sounds even more so with HD being and "adult" Top 40. I guess it depends on what you prefer, musically, but my two cents are that Y plays too much unfamiliar stuff, and HD is very very safe (not a bad thing when you want to maximize your non-PPM Arbitron figures).

Imaging blows. Just blows. It just sounds very slapped-together and simple. Sort of like their logo.

Never been a big fan of CC CHRs, what with their syndicated this, syndicated that, but with the heritage CHR in the market also airing a syndicated morning show, it's sort of a draw in that daypart, and while Y102.3 has a satellite-fed night show (which I'm sure has local stabs, but don't seem to quite work), HD has a local jock either on or VT'd who just does the basics, so I mean, what do you make of that battle, either?

Kris Fisher on HD owns 'em in PM drive, though.

Been in the market a lot of late with my mom's failing health and eventual passing, so I've had plenty of time to hear 'em. Those are my thoughts.

Thanks for the info!

It sounds typical for a smaller market CC CHR, rhythmic lean is not surprising. I'd bet mid-days and afternoons are live (I know mid-days have to be). Y seems to be breaking the hits (which would include unfamiliar songs) faster than HD, which is great when done properly and in moderation. I don't like CC's CHR stations much either, except that the music is usually programmed and researched well on them.

I find HD's adult lean interesting, especially since when they launched there wasn't a CHR in town. Since Augusta's ratings only come out twice a year, we don't get as much info....but it'll be interesting to see who becomes the leading CHR. Y is creeping up on HD.

Ron, you and I both worked at Y-105, and I don't think we're much different in age. I grew up with Mark Summers doing mornings and Harley mid-days with his Golden Hour on WBBQ, which both are working for Beasley (last I checked), who owns HD. Is it just me, or do you also weep when the "heritage" CHR in the market is HD?

SN: Is 102.3 still in the Aloha Trust? Is it still up for sale?

Well, it's not as if Beasley has "their version" of CHR, the way Jan Jefferies (watered down, usually) at Cumulus or the way Clear Channel (tests well in L.A. and Dallas and NYC so play it everywhere....) does, so put in the hands of those working in the local cluster, it's no surprise (to me, anyhow) that they took a conservative "adult" pop approach.

I get why they put Kraddick on, when they launched, too; the market not having a CHR for a few years, it was a risk, and signing on a nationally-syndicated morning show lessened their risk input. It's not optimal, no, but bounce around the country and you'll find there aren't many live an local CHR morning shows left anymore, sadly.

Yeah, 102.3 is in Aloha Trust. Seeing that the station has potential though, I wonder if they'll pull it out. Just because it's in the trust, I don't think they have to sell it. It's their weakest Augusta signal but is still pretty good.

Clear Channel's CHR stations, musically, tend to be very good (that's just from my taste, though). Execution can be a different story. Many lean rhythmic. Cumulus' CHR stations tend to be more pop based. HD may be Beasley's only CHR, I'm not sure. Pretty sad if that's the heritage CHR.

Y102.3 is a true CHR, rough edges yes, but they do appear to be playing "all the hits." If they keep that up, beating HD isn't out of the question IMO. Maybe it would be smart for HD to get a little more aggressive now.
