Y106

Y106 from Columbus, Indiana is being heard very clear here in Delhi. I have never in my life ever head this station come in so clear I have only got it one time and it was hard to get in. I wonder if they increased thier signal. This is the format I would love to see on 94.9 when it goes rock.

You are listening to WWWY North Vernon, IN--Columbus market--now owned by White River Broadcasting (the big dawgs in town). The calls were origionally WOCH when it was licenced to D. Ochs in the Jennings County community of North Vernon. Ochs also owned 1460AM there, and maintained studios off US 50 west of that city. The WWWY calls were originally issued to Class A 3kw 104.9 in Columbus, but transferred after a station format flip back in the 90s.

The station was effectively moved to Columbus many years ago when WRB made Ochs "an offer he couldn't refuse"--yet the COL remains intact because the 50kw/500-ft site is between Columbus and North Vernon (about 10 miles from each). The station has always had a very good signal, and one the "skips" often--as far as Wyoming--and (personally--western N. Carolina).

It's "retro rock" format is very popular in central Indiana. White River has done a good job with it, but the Ochs era is very charming... Tapes of that era are coveted! You ought to search them out for some real 70s entertainment value!

'Hope you enjoy 106.1 from the middle of Indiana!

Y106 is much better then WTUE out of Dayton, OH which I get all the time. It's also better then 92.5 The Fox.

Y-106 has been in that format (very successfully) since 2000... besides the 60dbu area, it is popular in Bloomington (where Indiana University is located) and the south 'burbs of Indianapolis. It's fortunate (even in this era) to not suffer a lot of co and adjacent-channel interference in many directions, so it has a "big area". It really is an enjoyable station for fans of 60-70-80s pop-rock. YES--IMHO--it's better than 92.5 in Cincy ::)

The first station I ever interviewed at in 1975 was WOCH. Interesting little place. I seem to recall them having a large room with a piano.

My college roommate was from North Vernon and his mother worked there. What I remember most from my visit was the electrically-short AM tower out back. It was about 150 feet, and served as the mast for TEN FM antenna bays back in the 70s. We used to joke that you could almost reach up and touch the lowest FM element from the ground  OUCH MR. Ochs! I guess OSHA wasn't around back then! ;D
