Y94 Please help with call letters

I can find no reference, whatsoever about Y94 in Houston.
I found a vinyl radio compilation called "Y-94 Homemade Album,"
but it has no reference to the call letters. The inside sleeve has pictures of a
couple of DJs, but only one is ID'ed, and all it says is that his name is "Doc."

This appears to be late 70s, or very early 80s (based on the board in the picture).

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I know 93.7 was KRLY at one time. I never listened to it, though; so, I don't know if what it called itself. However, my guess is that's the station.

WOW-- Many, many thanks. I've had this album for three weeks and have not found any information about it or the station. I'll post pics when I get it posted on my web site.

Yes, Y-94 was KRLY. Y-94 was a rock station from around 1977 to early 1979, when they flipped to Disco 94, one of the worst memories of my teen years. From what I remember, Y-94 was not very hard, but played Steely Dan, Bob Seger, Talking Heads, the early Cars, Boston, Styx, etc. They never talked over the music.

For those of you that remember, I wonder if Y-94 would be more like a AAA station today?

Didn't KRLY 94.1 use "Love 94" at some time during the disco years? I have it in my mind hearing "Love 94" being used for at least some time in that era. Then again my mind is another thread.

After being KARO, it became KBNO, and then KRLY, which was a Top-40 station. It's main competition was KRBE and KILT 610. When it became Y-94, I don't know what management was thinking. KLOL and KILT-FM were fully ensconced as AOR stations. After Disco 94, it morphed into Love 94. The show known as "Quiet Storm," first got it's use in Houston on that frequency. There was this real fine nurse, whew! Anyway, she I would light the candles and enjoy the music. The call letters remained the same until the early 1980s. It was changed to KLTR, "Lite Rock."

KXYZ-FM was also known as Love 96 and a 1/2, before it became KAUM in the early 1970s.

During the late 1970's, KCOH made a stab at buying. Too bad they didn't.

I remember the switch to Disco 94 very well. The night before they changed, Ted Nugent played The Summit on his Weekend Warriors tour. It was my first big rock concert and Angel was the opening act. That night as the concert was letting out, Y-94 did what I think they called a "concert replay". I don't recall if they played the exact set list that Nugent played or if they maybe just played an hour or so of his music. Anyway, that's what was playing when I went to sleep. When my alarm went off in the morning, I heard the end of a disco song and the DJ said, "No, it's not April Fools, we're Disco 94!" I unplugged my radio and threw it in the closet. I have no idea why, but for some reason, I didn't listen to KLOL then. I believe I was 14 at the time.

One thing that always stood out to me about Y-94 was that although I never heard Rush in the regular rotation, I heard them several times on feature Y-94 had called the "mini-concert" which was basically a 3-song set from an artist. That was where I first heard Rush.

I see that I have not one, but two copies of the Y-94 Homemade Album. The most notable artist
on the album would be Guy Schwartz.

so weird. I dont remember KRLY being AOR. I always remember them being Love 94 and Disco. Man, youre bringing back memories.

Yes I remember it as yesterday... KRLY was "Y-94, Houston's album station"..... Bill Todd was the PD and Doc Morgan played The Beatles "Golden Slumbers" at 2:56PM and came out at 3PM with the BEEG GEES "Jive Talkin'" and Disco 94 was born.

I vaguely remember the flip was right before the Boston concert. Y-94 was promoting the concert before the flip, and I remember people shouting something to the effect of "Disco 94 sucks" before Boston came on. By the way, I remember the opening act for Boston was some guy I had never heard of before the concert. Some guy named Sammy Hagar.

Thelonious Monster have a fun little song about him called, "Sammy Hagar Weekend". I still have a KRLY-94 bumper sticker in my sticker collection.

In your Texas collection, I have the KRLY version of the WOAI album that we had at FM-94 KRLY. Also on Take records I have the Houston KILT version of the 21 KLIF Klassics.

I don't know how to email you directly (since I can't view your profile).
I would love to have a picture of your LPs (and the song listings).
email me at: [email protected]

Thanks in advance!

I'll get that together and send them to your e-mail. I believe the track list is the same, but I'll include them for you.
