Ya Reckon?

It'll be interesting to see how this shakes out. KQPN can't survive being one show for 23 hours a day or whatever it is.

The comments under the article are most enlightening. Sports show fans must be the same 'round the world, loyal to their team and their show host and everyone else is gaaabage.

On the bright side, at least you guys don't have Paul Finebaum. :)

Actually, for a time, Paul Finebaum's program aired on KQPN from 6-9 PM on tape delay. KQPN took it off several months ago. Alabama sports talk radio is crazy.

Yeah, I've been reading comments like that (on this board) for years.
And yet, he is still on the air.

"That just means the checks he writes to buy his airtime are still clearing the bank."

That's the kind of backward thinking that keeps announcers from making a decent wage.

Yeah, you're right.
That model is such a huge success these days - I would stick with it.
Becoming an entrepreneur and making more money and controlling your own destiny would be a big mistake.

That's the way small town radio stations were run back in the early days...bands/groups would by the time and sell their own sponsors. I don't recall many of the becoming rich or famous....mostly an ego thing for them. If a station wants to have that little town image...they're free to do so.

Times have changed.
The radio industry is in the crapper - in case you hadn't noticed.
You can continue to work for a corporate structure in a dying industry or try something different.
I read comments on this board from people who are glad they left the business because of all the cut-backs and bad decision making.
Yet when someone tries to better himself and become his own business and his own boss, you goof on him. Not logical.

I support Chris Vernon. I admire somebody that does his own sales and on-air work. That's called survival instinct in commercial radio. Do I wish things were different? Yes. I wish commercial stations had live, local talent 18 hours a day, and that they got paid at least twice minimum wage. I wish the talent didn't have to do their own sales. However, that "ain't" the way the business works these days.

So you are saying that everyone that gets paid by a radio station earns the right to a big ego?
I don't think so.

Make up your mind.
Is it about money or ego.

The reason he created his own business was for additional income and security (after a new owner bought the station).
A good decision considering the state of corporate radio these days.

Verno's sponsors include: Lexus of Memphis, Restaurant Iris, a local dentist, etc - all upscale local advertisers.

Don't be jealous just because you couldn't pull it off.

Considering that 730's owners are now the same ones who own WMQM and WLRM, I'd rather see Verno stay on as long as he can afford it rather than it going to more dollar a holler preachers. I guess it's still dollar a holler, but at least it's sports and not the usual line up of crackpots and conspiricy freaks.

"Verno's sponsors include: Lexus of Memphis, Restaurant Iris, a local dentist, etc - all upscale local advertisers."

Who is the ad agency for those clients? I don't know how to say this nicely, but he has no measurable audience. To my knowledge, he's never even gotten a tenth of a share. Any money spent advertising on Verno Radio might as well be tossed into the wind. Let's put it this way: Thaddeus Matthews gets a 1.5. The oldies station in Colt, Arkansas pulls a 0.3 in the Memphis metro. Verno 24/7 can't even get a 0.1.
