Yahoo Users Get Ready For Price Increase, Some Open Some Hidden.

Our primary web host (four sites) for the last six years, not to mention most of our domains (seven) is Yahoo. Today we got notice they are jacking hosting fees from 8.95 a month, to 12.95. Domain renew has gone up to a whopping $34.95 a year, that was the sneaky part. They never notified us they were jacking up the rates, the surprise came in the form of a credit card bill. I would not mind the higher fees; if it was not for the fact Yahoo, has the worst customer service. and no telephone support. Our site statistics has been down since January, despite emails to support, it is still faulty. Another sneaky move, they just moved e-mail to the pay side, making it harder to bail without loosing stored e-mail files.

I know a number of community broadcasters use Yahoo, for hosting. As if the budget is not tight enough with the economic meltdown; we broadcasters get handed this zinger! Now we have a choice: Pay up! Or go through the hassle of moving to a new host and lost e-mail stored on their site.

We do have www.XRQK.com and www.radiobrandy.net on www.Powweb.com, where they still renew domains for $15, and provide far better service for 7.77 a month, I guess Yahoo failed to get the notice that sticking it to loyal customers is bad for business. I hate moving!

Miffed Yahoo Customer

Yahoo can't even get my email from appearing in their client's spam folder and you expect them to be a decent web host? You shouldn't be surprised. They can't figure out how to put a domain in their whitelist? I say screw 'em, Steve. They aren't doing anybody any favors as far as I can tell and I'm not at all surprised they didn't warn people about the rate increase. I would check with your state's Attorney General's office - they may have been required by law to send EVERYBODY a 30 day warning about a rate increase.

While not the best on the planet, I've used Midphase and they always seem to be running specials which cover multiple domain hosting and email on the cheap. I've also used DirectNic for domain name renewal/management after getting out from under the pricey Network Solutions. I'd love to find another good web host as a backup so I can split some of my sites between a couple of providers.

www.XRQK.com has been on Powweb for six years, I have never had a problem. I have only called customer once for a question, and it was picked up on the first ring! Bill, and any one else, looking for a change; I highly recommend them, and the price is right for community broadcasters on a tight budget; under $70 for the first year ($5.77mo).

Now today, after digging over Yahoo's website, I found a phone number for so called customer service. I was placed on hold for a whopping 56 minutes; I will say the guy who picked up the phone was helpful, and believe it or not, was in the USA and spoke in English. I remembered one my domains may be up soon, sure enough, it's up on Sept 8th 08, turns out Yahoo uses Melbourneit, a registrar based in Australia. I am told they jacked the rates on short notice, as verified by me, and it would be a nightmare for Yahoo, to change the a registrar they use.

The reason many community broadcasters, on a very tight budget use Yahoo in the beginning, is they made it very easy to sign up; with a total sign up cost of just $6.95 for the works! Compared to the $70 to $100 upfront demanded by others. It's the old get them hooked now on the cheap, and nail them later business plan.

Because we have been with them six years, come this September, and the number of accounts we have. Yahoo knew we were getting ready to pull all of our business, they offered a deal on domains that we could live with. I still see Powweb getting our new business for now on, moving everything over will be a major hassle, but it will be done!

I'd love to find another good web host as a backup so I can split some of my sites between a couple of providers.
That's why we moved a few sites over to PowWeb, mainly into sub folders, to see if they would get a lower rank being in a sub folder. Moving two sites, got us bumped down in Google for a bit, and had no effect on others. We also have mirrors on PowWeb, changing host can get you knocked down or
de-listed by Google for a time. Not good for the radio business, anymore that having the transmitter blow up!

Bill, it does help in ranking, to have multiple well ranked sites pointing at your site. Even if the other site is yours, but on a different provider.
