Y'all Ain't Gonna Believe This S..t

:D Here's a good one from the trenches gang. I got the boot last night at a local "country" bar. It was just a part time gig so not to worry. But here is the reason why... I didn't play music from Rhianna, Beyonce, Pink, etc so the young people could line dance.

If you re-read, I said "Country Bar". ??? So I'm driving home last night thinking when is this going to slop over into "Country Radio". In a few years, will the playlist read "Kenny Chesney, Beyonce, Bon Jovi, Trace Adkins, Pink, Bruce Springsteen, Toby Keith, Rhianna, Jimmy Buffett, Eagles, Sugarland, etc"?

Does this not take us back full circle to radio in the early 60's when songs of different formats co-exsisted on the same station?

Your thoughts....

I understand where you're coming from.  That doesn't sound right at all.  You'd think that being in a Country bar, that would be the only music they'd cater to.

...To answer your question, you may be right.  I wasn't even born till 1971 but I've noticed, as of late, that many different "Singers" and "Formats" are now being heard on Country Radio.

P.S. Far as I'm concerned, this new Country isn't for me.  I detest it.

The other night I had a friend stop by and I had the "Classic Country" channel from Warner Cable playing. A Patsy Cline song came on and he says "that's not country, it's pop." He's more of a rock fan but there was a lot of truth there. Look at the evolution of Eddy Arnold and Ray Price, their later sound is a whole lot different from the early recordings.

That said I wouldn't consider Beyonce or Pink country and while playing their songs might appeal to younger people, how would you line dance to it? Some of the more traditional rock groups are shifting toward country which I believe is a survival move. If they want air play they have got to get it there because a lot of the so called rock stations will not play the older acts.

Oh yeah, Snoop Dog is rumored to be considering recording a Johnny Cash song, how is that going to sound?

I'm sorry that Wazzie that you lost your gig, but I'm sure you'll get another if you want it.

The attack on country music still goes on till it seems like your use to it and don't pay it anymore attention. True music does change style little by little with the times but mind you I said little by little. A lot of the music changes on country music over the last 13 years seems to be forced on the public and not a natural progression. When music changes are sudden and don't seem natural there probly not. This would be the reason so many people are complaining about the way country music sounds today (ie: like crap) one good song five not so good two bad ones and maybe another good one. When I go thru new country music checking songs for our radio station I hate it and it use to be something I really looked foward to hearing the newest songs first, now it's toss it, toss it, late night only, play every so often, hay here is a good one wow I found a good song.

So basicly, you got fired for not playing what the crowd wanted to hear? Thats what your saying, right? Its a BAR, for petes sake. What do you care what music youre playing?

Hey Voicetrack, you missed the point. They bill themselves as a COUNTRY bar. I wouldn't expect to hear Garth, Martina or King George in a hip-hop bar (unless it was remixed to death). ::)

If the bar didn't promote itself as a country bar and wasn't full of hats & boots, fine. I'll play anything you want. But I'm not going to have 100 people pissed at me because of a handful of "young people that want to line dance".

Names and expectations often clash. This reminds me of people saying they like to go to S*******'s for coffee, but when you inquire further, they are not coffee fanatics, they are looking for an "adult" way to drink cream and milk.

A "Country bar" full of boots and hats will contain many people who would clear out completely if
uncompromised country music were played.

I hope you laughed at them as you were leaving. I'm sure they can find someone to DJ who doesn't know the difference.

I am currently doing a gig in a country bar in the middle of redneck hell in Southeast Texas, the decor comes complete with burning crosses & everyone has their sheets & hoods pressed & starched, but the younger ones get into some of the newer music including rap.

There are some of the crowd that will get ticked or walk out when I play something besides traditional or Texas country but for the most part it's not an issue.

Reading your crowd well let's you know when you can get away with it & when you can't. Generally I play it later in the evening, 11 P.M. to close & don't run long sets of it so as not to chase the core country people out.

Been at this club for about 8 months & have only had a few complaints. By the way I am more of a rock fan myself but I play to my crowd. I don't like all the music I play but if it keeps the crowd moving & happy then I have earned my money so I can put up with it.

I recently took a 3 week break from it & they brought in a younger dj that played what he liked for the most part & when I went back in the regulars let me know how much they had missed me & didn't like what he had done. The numbers the club brought in while he was there were also way down, in number of people & liquor sales.

Sorry you lost your gig, I am sure you will find another one.
