Yamaha's RX-V863 HD Receiver

Inside Radio announced the addition of the Yamaha RX-V863, a high end receiver with HD Radio, to Yamaha's receiver line. It sports a price tag of $1000.00. But here again, HD Radio is being trumped by the satcasters.

You can get a Yamaha RX-V463 with all the bells and whistles of the V863 but is XM and Sirius ready (no HD Radio). For Sirius it needs an optional SIRIUS ConnectT Home Tuner kit. How much is the tuner kit? $59.00. The receiver itself is only $350.00

So while the RX-V863 is a pretty piece of gear, I don't see it going into too many homes. It's the BMW/HD Radio elitism all over again.

Well, I was looking through my latest Best Buy catalog today when I spied a Sony in-dash radio that was "HD-ready" for 99.99. It's the model CDXGT320. I thought, "maybe it's time for me to think seriously about getting HD Radio for the car." I especially liked the iPod connectivity feature of this radio.

But then I looked at the radio on Crutchfield's site, and came to the sad realization that "HD-ready" means just that. To get HD Radio you have to buy a clunky under the dash (or under the seat) box, the Sony XT-100HD, for another 99.99. And although you can connect an iPod by means of a front dash stereo mini input, for full iPod control you need another "hanging box", the Sony XA-110IP for 50 dollars.

It's not the 250 bucks that bothers me so much as the under dash and transmission boot real estate these peripheral items take up. This is not the kind of integration (or lack of it) we should be seeing on new in-dash stereos.

At 99.99, the Sony CDXGT320 is really no bargain.
