Yankees 40, Giants 14

At least in NYC, where those numbers reflect the share of TV homes tuned into each game.

The Yankees/Angels game on Fox had a 26.4 rating and 40 share, while the Giants/Cards game on NBC had an 9.3 rating and 14 share. Nationally (in the 56 overnight-rated markets), baseball beat football, thanks to New York. Outside of NYC, football won the night 10.5 to 9.8.

Regular season game vs. World Series possibility. Not surprising in the least. A better comparison would be a Yankee-Baltimore game in June and this mostly unimportant NFL game.

The Greensboro News & Record had a small item
on its sports pages yesterday; the way it read,
you'd think those numbers were national overnights,
rather than NYC only. I don't know that I'm too
surprised that the Yankees game would do better
than the Giants game in New York, despite the
Giants' record.

Generally speaking I'm sure the Giants have a higher rating for a regular season game than the Yankees do. The fact that the Yankees were in a playoff game running directly opposite a Giants regular season game would tend to skew any fair comparison.

Giants normally do well in primetime against the Yankees when also playing in primetime on ESPN2...

That's no doubt true, and I'd bet the World Series on Fox
is beating everything against it in NYC.
