Yankees broadcast legend passes away :(

Phil Rizzuto, the longtime voice of the New York Yankees on WPIX-TV (CW) channel 11, passed away on Tuesday in West Orange, NJ at the age of 89. It's a sad day in baseball. HOLY COW indeed! :'(

Not being a New Yorker, my strongest memory
of Rizzuto is the nightly "Sports Time" radio show
he did on CBS in the '60s (I think that was the name
of it; in any case, he was quite good).

Does anyone know that he was the first mystery
guest on "What's My Line?" in 1950? According to
Steve Beverly, he was paid $50 for his appearance;
in later years, mystery guests got $750. He was
also a panelist on the popular DuMont game show
"Down You Go," and made some appearances
on Dick Enberg's "Sports Challenge" in the '70s.

Yankee fans, you've lost one of your all-time greats.

M yheart goes out to all Yankee fans on the passing of one of the greats. He was an awesome player and great announcer. I feel your pain since I cried when Harry Carey died. This reminds me that one day soon I will feel the pain like you do today when my broadcasting hero, Larry Munson passes on.

I haven't been able to watch a Cubs game since
Harry Caray passed away; I once went to Chicago
to see the Braves play the Cubs, in part because
I wanted to sing along with Harry on "Take Me Out
To The Ball Game" in person. (This was when the
Braves were still perennial losers. My dad and I
met Skip Caray in the Atlanta airport, told him we
were on our way to Chicago to see the Braves, and
he wanted to know why we'd go all that way to see
a bunch of losers. Little did he know.)

And as a UGA grad, I can tell you it will definitely
not be the same when Larry Munson's gone.
If it weren't for the delay between his call on radio
and the television picture, I would turn down the
TV sound and listen to him on the radio.
