I wish that would happen on WEBK EVERYTIME that the Yankees are scheduled to play a game....

While the Yankees broadcasts sound good.. Mixing Yankee broadcasts and a AAA deprived of key weekend and nighttime listening is like mixing oil and water. A disaster. I don't hear a lot of sponsors on it, but the WCBS AM 880 commercials and promos sound good in Vermont... I would suspect that just about every devoted WEBKster, and they are out there, gets royally pissed when they hear the Yankees instead of "World Class Rock" that should be coming out of your speakers..

The Yankees should be on, but not on WEBK. I'd bet the Yankees would sell better if they were on WJJR for example, (it's mostly voicetracked / syndicated shows during that time anyway) again ratings don;t matter in Market # 179, but the 'revenue ratings' could prove to be interesting in a positive way..

Or you can enjoy the Yankees on XM Radio, as well as every major league team !

Disaster is true...why are there very few local spots? Hmm...seems very obvious...Pamal, once again, at its best...is there even a sales staff in the Rutland office? At least the sales staff at WCBS is doing their job.

Another sign of pure brilliance from Pamal. Lets take the core programming away from the station for 150+ days over a 7-month period and broadcast a 5-hour game. How many listeners have you just lost????? Lets go with base demo of 50% female 50% male for the station, you just lost most of your females, then my guess is 25% of your males. Then lets make it a Yankees game in VERMONT. My guess is they just lost another 75%. What’s left????? Not rocket science here but ….(fill in the blank)

Comments please…… lets discuss……..

Well believe it or not, you do have some "non-sox" fans up here. does a baseball game belong on an FM music station? not necessarily, but look what Clear Channel has done in the Upper Valley. . .ALL Red Sox (and N.E. Patriots) games are now on Rock 93-9, WMXR Woodstock, VT. It is strange to have the Yankees on a big FM signal with a tower in Killington, VT, but it's very common these days to find sports on the FM band. Just look at all the flagships in the NFL and MLB that have gone from heritage 50,000 watt AM stations over to FM. ex: Pittsburgh Pirates moving from 1020-KDKA to FM News-talk 104-7 FM.

Is there anyone from Pamal that can make sense of running Yankee games on a station who's listeners prefer mountain climbing and canoeing to baseball? Is there no one to defend the new GIANT of Rutland County? Yes...sports is being done on FM...in Rutland, the Patriots on 101 the Fox and NASCAR on Cat Country...but somehow, they fit on those stations. Baseball DOES NOT fit on AAA...or whatever WEBK is...just ask the sales staff at Pamal...they know that , because they can't..or won't sell it...

Very good points Dudeman, you must believe in your product or you cant/wont sell it. Or maybe it’s just too much work to try to sell it. And I agree that sports on an FM stick can work if done in the geographic location to the team. Look at WEEI in Boston, all sports in a sports town, huge!!!
The Patriots and Nascar do work locally but they are only one day per week. Big difference compared to an average of 6 days a week of baseball for a team that is on average of 5-6 hours away by car. What’s next Buffalo Bills football?

Absolutely! What...no Bulls games? Maybe Tampa Bay Hockey...Given the HUGE Yankee fan base in VT...and every Sox fan will tell you they exist...it shouldn't be that much work. The fact is that WEBK is a wasted signal. Yes, 4 or 5 days a week of Yankee baseball...if the music was more popular, Yankee fans might stick around a little...as true to Pamal form, everything around a potential moneymaker falls flat...

Maybe Pamal should switch the Yanks to Cat? At least they'll get more than 2 listeners NOT to change the station... :)

182 Yankees games is a huge time commitment. Especially when most games are airing at nights (summer nights) and weekends when the potential to turn on a lot of ears to the good stuff WEBK is doing between the Yankee game broadcasts. Sports on FM is a good thing, especially football when it's only one day a week and 16 regular season games. That's an easy do, Nascar is similar, just more races, but not nearly the commitment as a major league baseball schedule.

The folks at WMXR 93.9 have the best of both worlds since I believe the games are only carried on the 93.9 part of the simultcast leaving 101.7 to rock on. Both signals have a high degree of overlap..

It's not like the Yankees are exclusive.. On terrestrial radio, WVMT Burlignton, I believe WSNO Barre, and the new Team 104.5 from Albany double cover a fair amount of WEBK's coverage area. XM carries major league baseball as well, and you can drive anywhere and not have to find another station carrying a Red Sox or Yankees or any baseball teams' games.

On top of killing your music programming it's a sizable expense if you don't come close to selling out the games. The Yanks charge about $40 per game (small market), plus WEBK doesn't automate so another 5 hours board op goes for every game. WSNO which did automate last season dropped the Yanks this year because of cost.

What is particularly unfortunate about this, is that WEBK's programming is now the best that it has been since Pamal gutted it and blew out the staff a few years ago. As was pointed out in another post, the AAA audience is not a baseball audience....Move baseball to the Country station and simulcast it on Froggy from Glens Falls if necessary to help make up for the lost coverage area....

Well...These baseball games are certainly a gift to Zeb Norris up at WNCS, and I suspect to the Fox, as well...

WEBK's on air products has improved dramatically. "Uncle Dave" gets it, and he has that all important quotient called passion, pride, and a desire to win. What a concept. James is also sounding great as well, and he too knows the drill. It's all depends on whether the "professor of programming' will let them do their thing to succeed, but we suspect his plate is rather overloaded right now with other things brewing.

WVMT does have a great signal, and shoots a fair amount of it's signal south of the transmitter site. Just like Uncle Dave gets a potential gift when the I-Dude takes his 2 weeks, The Fox, The Point, WCLX, WMUD, WEQX, and any other rock or AAA get gifts of listeners for 182 games.. Hopefully this will be the final season of the Yankees on WEBK. Hearing Yankees games over the air is good, use another station in the portfolio (WJJR) where the listeners don't have the passion for music as AAA listeners..

What a great discussion ! 8)

The "professor" is busy...no doubt...I'm sure "Mary Anne" isn't it making it easy for him. Does the "professor" have the capability to allow the talented staff at WEBK to do their "thing"?? Judging from the results of other "things brewing", I don't think so. How much longer will the Howell's allow it to go on? Can the Skipper and Gilligan save the day? Maybe Ginger will sell some spots... ;D
