Yankees Radio: Decision 2012

Why pay huge bucks for Kay and a ton of dough for Knicks/Rangers rights?

The Jets, too! WEPN probably overpays for the Jets. The Jets are one of only three NFL teams to not have an FM flag or co-flag. The others are the Giants on WFAN with a 50 kW blaster and the Denver Broncos on blaster KOA.

The big, bad smack talkin' Jets are the only NFL team whose flag is on a directional AM signal! Half of their fan base cannot listen to their games without satellite radio! No further comment! :)

I think this is a slight exaggeration. They actually have a number of stations in their network that as a whole covers the area pretty well. The problem is no one knows about it because they don't publicize it. Obviously having one strong station would be highly preferable especially for publicity during the week.

Is the local NFL team that valuable a radio property? Most people have Sunday afternoons and Monday nights off and watch NFL games on TV -- a much higher percentage, I would think, than MLB fans, who are often working, traveling or doing other things that keep them away from the TV when their teams' games are being played.

You'd be surprised; the games do very nicely. Lots of folks doing yard work with the game on the radio. And the pre- and post-game shows are valuable programming as well, not the least of which are the 70,000 heading to/from the home games.

True but large areas of New Jersey and Long Island cannot receive WEPN or any of the smaller stations. WEPN's nighttime reception is very spotty. The Jets do have a strong FM affiliate at the Jersey Shore, classic rocker WCHR (105.7 The Hawk) Manahawkin, whose signal reaches to Asbury Park in Monmouth County. :)

Depending where I live in the HV listening area, WEPN's signal is strong except at night. I agree with that. Instead of listening to WEPN carrying ESPN Radio, I listened to Fox Spirts Radio on WGHQ, and it sounds a lot better than ESPN. Fox Spiets Radio ran from 5 PM until 6 AM everyday and Fox Sports Radio is part of Clear Channel, WGHQ is a Pamal owned station after Clear Channel was bought out since 2007.

WEPN used to be simulcast on WLIR 107.1 on Eastern Long Island... I forget what format they are now, though...

According to what I have read they are simulcast on both WLIR and WRCN on Long Island.

Yeah, even here in Sox country, there are people loyal to them(thanks to WCBS's clear channel signal, as well as the affiliate at AM 790 and 99.7 FM in Providence).

To get back on the Yankees thing, I hope that the partnership with the Yankees and WCBS-AM will be over soon, but if not, maybe WCBS-AM will extend the Yankees contract until 2020 which will be another 9 years, but that's not going to happen. I listened to WKXP's "The Wolf" which is a country station and they're still carries the Yankee games from WCBS-FM's HD3. As you know WKXP's "The Wolf" is owned by Cumulus, the same company that now owns WABC after Citadel has left. I hope as I was saying that WABC needs to bring the Yankees back to 770 for the next season. WABC has not carrying the Yanks since 2001, but I hope they should bring it back. It's Cumulus' decision.

how about putting the yankees on 95.5 ?

I'm sure it's come up somewhere in this thread. It would basically mean blowing up the current music format. Don't know if they're prepared to do that in NYC. They just did it in DC, but the ratings at the station there was much lower than WPLJ.

I'd be annoyed if the Yanks went to FM. I go to New England frequently and there's no station up there that has coverage of the great Satan, I mean Yankees. 880 comes in on Cape Cod like a local in the daytime. Nights you can get it on your fillings. I know it's selfish, but I couldn't be the only one that travels in that direction and follows the Yanks.

THE FAN is the place the Yankees should be! CBS should move the Yankees there and put the Mets... on WWRL or something. Seriously, the #1 sports station should have the #1 baseball team. It's got to be driving them crazy that they've been stuck with the loser Mets for so long. I know as a PD it would drive me nuts that in August, the team on my station is done while a pennant race is heating up on the news station my company owns down the dial.

I thought the #1 sports station had the #1 football team tho. My fiancee is a Giants fan & we live only 20 miles or so from Foxboro. She can still pick up the games if she wants.

Agreed. The Yankees should be on the Fan. No doubt. Let the Mets go to 1050.

It would also make more sense in having Francessa on Yes and the Fan, and the Yankees on Yes and the Fan.

And then you would have one, big, happy, synergistic family! Play ball!

Raissman's column today does imply that if 1050 gets Yankee rights, then they would indeed be simulcast on former sister station WABC:

I figured 101.9 didn't have much of a chance since it looks like they don't care about sports.

Does Raissman know what Cumulus brass thinks about this arrangement? They might have someting to say! How about the big, bad smack talkin' Jets? They're not gonna be happy about this! :)
