Sean Grande and Cedric Maxwell wil do the Celtics play-by-play on WRKO . I think if 1510 still want to be a sports station , they should air the NEW YORK YANKEES games for next year . Alot of people in Boston area will listen to YANKESS WIN , DUH YANKEES WIN ! There is a good amount of Yankees fans here in the Boston area that cant pick up the Yankees station in Providence ( or 880 NYC ) and the Red Sox Nation will listen to 1510 if they air Yankees games to see if Yankee won or lost and how far back is the red sox . Red sox Nation and Yankees fans listening to 1510 , means big ratings for 1510 .
______________

I can't think of a single Red Sox fan who would listen to the biased Yankees coverage, just as no Yankees fan would listen to WEEI, no conservative would listen to Air America, no liberal would listen to Bill Bennett, etc.

It's an option, but if it was an attractive option, another station would have taken the rights by now. And isn't there some kind of anti-competitive rule so that MLB teams are not heard in cities with other MLB teams?

I would think Infiniti would have concerns about a product it's associated with going out on a competing signal in a market where it has such a big presence. It's not unheard of, of course, since Westwood One broadcasts are heard on the sports stations, but as much as I'd like to be able to hear the Yankees broadcasts better, I don't know if that scenario you lay out would happen.

It won't happen since the Yankees charge about $1k/game for affiliates -- unless George's ego gets in the way and he wants to stick it to Henry, Lucchino, et al.

And Infinity doesn't have any say over who airs the Yankees games. They are produced in-house by YES. Even if Infinity was in charge, why would they care if 1510 aired Yankees games? Infinity has no sports station in this market. Westwood One games air all the time on signals that compete with Infinity stations, and Monday Night Football used to air on 620 when WFAN had the Mets. All WW1/Infinity care about is getting the ads cleared as many places as possible.

Are the Red Sox broadcasts handled that way? Is there a separate in-house network? I always hear the WEEI Red Sox Radio Network, but come to think of it, I never hear the WCBS Yankees network -- it's always just Yankees baseball or the Yankees radio network.

Will the Sox allow it? Is there some kind of Major League Baseball rule
against this? Yanks do have stations scattered throughout New England
and some can get WCBS OK, esp. at night, as well as 99.7/790.
Western Mass.; WVMT up in Burlington, VT, etc.

yeah.. that's great promotion for WWZN... "Boston's sports station is Boston's Yankees station!" Maybe they can hand out cards at Fenway next year with their logo and the Yankees'... can you just picture what would happen inside Fenway? ha ha...
Edited by MrAl on 10/02/05 09:33 AM.

What?!?

From the 'other side'. I bet you're wrong... I was born in Upstate NY to parents who went to Yankee Stadium after their wedding. I've lived to see Bucky, Buckner and Boone as well as 6 titles (out of 26... to 1), and eagerly await October 2005. But, I think Joe Castiglione is one of the better play-by-play voices in baseball today. I can get Hartford's WTIC here in Albany at night to follow Red Sox games through the year. I also listen to MLB.com broadcasts of Red Sox as well as many other (Vin Scully!!!) broadcasts, to keep current of all the other teams. There is NOTHING better than listening to baseball on the radio, no matter who is playing.

Why wouldn't fans in Boston want to monitor the broadcasts if not only for the humor of John Sterling tripping on himself three or four times a game? But to your point, I guess if you look at it from a Red Sox fan vs. a baseball fan...

Re: What?!?

look, I'm a baseball fan but the vast majority of listeners in this market are Sox fans... that's why WEEI seldom goes beyond Sox/Pats talk...

The flip side

From my vantage point 350 miles west of Fenway, it's puzzling to me that the local media here in western New York are as completely Yankee-centric as they are. Sure, it's to be expected that there are a lot of Yankee fans here, but it's also 370 miles to Yankee Stadium from here, and there are a good number of Sox fans, not to mention Indians fans, Blue Jays fans, Twins fans (our local AAA team is the Twins' top farm club), etc. Yet the local paper ALWAYS leads with the Yankees, burying the rest of baseball deep in the sports briefs inside, and the TV news and radio talk shows aren't much better.

I'm guessing they're not getting much readership/listenership/viewership from all those people who come to Red Wings (AAA) games in Sox jerseys and caps, or from the car that drove past me today with a New York vanity plate with the Sox logo and "SOXIN04" on the plate...
______________
