And, maybe it's just another way that our entertainment choices get more specialized, because heyday mentioned smart phones, and the way I got around this problem was exactly that. MLB has an app called At Bat 12 - for $15 I got every game for the whole season for every team, along with all kinds of stats, video, etc.

And, unlike XM's MLB coverage, you can pick between home & away broadcasts using the At Bat 12 app. Every once in a while I'll listen to the early innings of an LA Dodgers West Coast game just to hear Vin Scully (the first 3 innings of Dodgers broadcasts are simulcast TV audio).

Richard in Allentown, PA (ex-East Aurora)

Exactly - I don't know why XM can't have both teams broadcasts on? I want to hear "my announcers" every game - not just the home games........I was afraid At Bat 12 would do the same thing as XM, but happily they don't.

Great idea on Scully. I'm going to have to do that myself!

Actually, Sirius just introduced "channels" for each of the MLB teams so that you can listen to the home broadcast for every game. It's only available online and for the app for smartphones. I've listened to the Yanks on my iPhone, it's a nice feature.

Well, ok...thank you. That does a lot for supporting the debate about OTA and subscription. This thread is about to take off!! :D

Alan Pergament wrote this today:

Inquiring minds want to know: Will another local radio station pick up New York Yankees games after WECK dropped them? One radio expert told me it might be hard to find one because it is too difficult to make money off of the games. WGR would appear to be the most likely choice. But it plans to start a new evening show about the Buffalo Bills that is hosted by John Murphy. So that leaves WKBW-AM as the only possibility that I see.

Another factor in whether stations (especially smaller ones) want to pick up sports programing off a network (like the Yankees) is that beginning a few years ago, these can be automated. It used to be you would bring in (pay) a board op for every game. At 1st this seemd great for owner/operators, but baseball, especially, is a very un-predictable sport. Things happen, like last minute postponements, rain delays, that may or may not resume some time later, extra innings, some exact time command on a log that can cause the programming to jump out of a game right in the middle of the exciting bottom of the 14th inning rally, causing phones to start ringing in radio stations where there is no one around to answer. All resulting in massive headaches for owners, bitter complaints from listeners and advertisors, and un-happy operations people who get called into the station late in the evening, or on the weekend to fix things.

With local sponsors already hard to find and keep happy, at some point it may become no longer really worth it.

Hope this will post in some sort of legible manner, it is my 1st on this board!

Thanks for listening,
JD Hill
