YAWN OR YAY!

Re: CHR = CONTEMPOARY HIT RADIO

Sorry for steering this back to what was being said two pages ago, but I'm late to the party and wanted to chime in...

I agree with Mid West Clubber. Some of those are classic rock songs which have no place on a CHR, even on a retro weekend.

BUT some of the songs that Truthsayer was offended by, are clearly in there for a "so uncool, it's cool" factor, like Vanilla Ice and Milli Vanilli. I think there's nothing wrong with that, if you're an adult CHR, and your audience skews toward the older end of the demo, and if the station plays them for what they are. If the jock says, "Remember this one? Admit it, you used to love it!" there's no harm done.

And I have news for you, if you've been to a bar in the last 10 years, the older end of your audience does request The Bee Gees, Abba and Cyndi Lauper to laugh at and sing along to, just for fun. No harm in throwing them in for fun. I even know 20 year-olds who love that stuff and will sing along to "Dancing Queen" as kind of a joke. Those weekends are there for that "Oh wow!" factor. In my humble opinion.

However, I'd never do it in a medium or large market. Not for a whole weekend.

Oh yeah, if you don't have a hot AC in the market, you can certainly do much more.

Nowing that, I have even less of an issue with what you're doing. You get to be all things to all people. You can create a format unique to your market!

Throwback weekends are good if done in an educated market with songs that are relateable..."PARTY SONG WEEKEND" AND "Old Skool" weekends as a means to repititiously play the stale songs in the gold catergory along with some records from "mom's heyday" is horrible...the younger demo (who are becoming more and more ignored becuase they are less predicatable) will forget you exist for a couple days.
