Yazoo City

Does anybody know what happened to a guy named Joel Netherland .. he worked in Greenville for years then purchased an AM/FM in Yazoo city .. not sure of the city but know he owned a station. Just wondering if anybody knows Joel or if he is still with us?

Jboyd .. thank you for your response. Sorry to hear that Joel has passed on. He was a really great guy and also a good friend many years ago. Joel and I went back to the late 50's in Greenville. Just goes to show that you need to stay in touch with your friends!

Joel was one of the "old timers" and a regular at our conventions on the coast back in the day.

Thank you guys for your responses .. Joel was one of a kind broadcaster. In my early years he took me under his wing and helped me a great deal! I am so sorry that I lost contact with him after so many years but know he is in a far better place now.

Great post! Whatever happened to Joel Netherland was one hell of a question for me to find on the Internet. Joel Netherland was a larger than life person--radio station owner, state representative--he first got elected by a one vote margin!--and like a woman in Mississippi once said to me on the phone, "When he was younger he must have been a goodlooking somebody!!!" Joel also once told me that as a kid he played baseball and was known as Stick Netherland, but I knew him when he was in his late 40s with silver hair like Charlie Rich. He was the stereotypical Cadillac driving--boy, did he love Cadillacs!!!--smoking, cursing, womanizing Southerner-and not necessarily in that order, and he had the hair and face to match! He as also incredibly shrewd, smart, and a master manipulator. He was really made to order for Hollywood, and it's really amazing he never made it there! He was really too talented to stay in Mississippi. And THE DEATH OF JOEL NETHERLAND was such a blockbuster to me when I heard about by mail in another state that I felt I had to share a little more than what you were told:Joel Netherland shot himself in the head in 1990 when a woman he was having an affair with threatened to go public on him! Some people might not like hearing that, but to me it was the only way a man like Joel Netherland could go--out in a big way!

Over the top? Maybe, but so was Joel! When I see the double standard in how Harry Reid is treated and how Trent Lott was treated it made me think about Joel, because if he had gotten into politics sooner he might have been right up there with those guys, and really, an over the top guy like Joel in the White House might be just what America needs today! In fact, the more I think about him, if the truth were told and he were alive, I think he'd be the first to say that his biggest regret was waiting too late to get out into the world outside Mississippi where more people could have known about him, either in entertainment of some kind or politics. Oh, and by the way:I just remembered that I've got a picture of Joel somewhere in front of one of his Cadillacs and in front of his old radio station, WJNS, which I will try to find and post this year!

Joel was one of my childhood mentors. I really did not need to know all these details. There was certainly a great deal more to his man than was posted. There are lots of men (and women) who have had extra marital affairs in not only this business but all across the business front. Thanks for sharing but no thanks for all the information.

Whoa! You missed the whole point of my post, kid! It's just that I've noticed over the years that the guys who make it big in life--politics, sports, business--are all guys like Joel who live life to the fullest! Most people lead such boring lives that we wouldn't even be talking about them like this! But if I offended you or anyone else, I apologize!

Tango .. Not offended at all and I appreciate your post as to what happen to Joel. Just hard to think of this guy that I knew as a young man putting a gun to his head. Thanks for telling it like it was .. and yes he did live live to the fullest!
