Yeah, Another "KOOL" Post

And so with the latest trends, the case is clear that KOOL is not going anywhere. Often times there is a belief that big budgets equate to bigger/better ratings. Perhaps so but there is a lot more to becomming successful whether it be radio or any other business. It takes dedication and it takes hard work.

I guess I've always been a stickler for accuracy in my professional life and I would think that when a station takes a new direction, those in charge would make sure to get it right the first time.

Hate to rehash what has been said dozens of times but who can forget the dead air and the repeat of 12 songs over and over when the station was launched. In my work, we have to test before we roll out a project. Even without $$$ budget, they could have executed flawlessly.

Might as well get this off my chest too. In the Times Union weekly TV Magazine, WWRR is still listed at 100.7. It doesn't take a big budget for someone in charge to make the phone call and get it corrected. I think within a week of Eagle's flip, I noticed the update for WJGL. Someone wasn't sleeping at the switch over at Cox.

If I were given the honor of programming a station in a market like Jax, I wouldn't go jockless midday. I would do whatever it took to make it work and if that meant going on the air, taking requests and interracting with the audience - I would. And if it meant I needed to program after hours - oh well.

This is a small part of the total picture. I've commented enough times about the positioning and selection of songs. The station needs to come to grips as to what they really want to be. I'm now beginning to think that taking the WKQL call letters was a mistake.

I guess we all love to dream. Wouldn't it be nice if Renda sold WKQL to Cummulus and Pat Garrett came back to Jax to program. I'll stop before y'all think I'm smoking something illegal. LOL

And my apologies.....

I've come off sounding a little pompous in my book and that was not the intent. I'm really a very down to earth guy who just has a great passion for radio. Sometimes I come off a little gruf but I love to root for the underdog.

Hopefully the underlying message of what I'm trying to say came through.

Peace, Love and Caio....:)

I,m not a radio guy just a fan
What they should have done was kept or change the calls to anything other than wkql and Fired all who was associated with arrow 100.7 and started brand new.NOT WITH THE OLD COOL JOCKS.
Thats what they do any where else.

and by the way even the old cool was in my opion not as good as some of the other oldie stations around.

Funny thing they were up in middays with out a jock

Yeah, I heard the jockless midday was up. Just a fluke if you ask me. Frankly, I think it's sad that when live talent is on - they hardly say anything as is. Poor Tom Murphy can't even use his "World Famous" signature as the station wants to stay low key. Low key my A**!.

We've seen in the last couple of years more and more automation. This is just the first step my friends. I'm sure the suits are ready to point out that if a daypart, let's say, gets a 3.0 share on automation and live talent gets a 3.2, then why bother? Cut expenses more and give the listeners what research says they really want - less talk and more music.

Back to Tom. On average, he speaks less than 3 minutes per hour in PM drive and mainly it's just to introduce traffic reports. I can just see a new sweeper coming along to intro the traffic without anyone. So how can poor Tom or anyone for that matter razzle and dazzle the audience?

Today's programming is designed to specifically have the audience remember the station only - not the talent. Thankfully I have repositories and my own tapes to listen to.
