I listened a little bit to Leykis this afternoon. Howard Stern is mild compared to this "person". I used to think talk radio discussed the issues of today. It is more like hate radio and "let's see who we can offend today".

I'm just sad about the change at the Planet......

actually...

Tom Leykis has been broadcasting for something like 18 years before his show arrived at this form. In person he is really not what you'd expect from hearing it. He's laid back mellow soft spoken and a consummate professional. In fact his show was originally a serious current events discussion forum style affair with a Libertarian bent, that was what he actually wanted to do, but guess what? It nearly ruined his career! His show was sinking like a stone until he came to the decision that "T&A SELLS" and that making a 7 figure income was better than moving back to WZZZ(zzz) in Podunk Arkansas for overnights. If your market is lucky enough to get his weekend wine tasting show "The Tasting Room" that is much more an accurate representation of Tom as a "human". No denying the Leykis 101 thing has made him very successful though, like it or hate it, people tune in and advertising sells!

No, the more accurate representation is what you are willing to do for money, in public - that reveals your true values as a person. Retaining your values and working overnights in Podunk is an honorable and honest thing to do. Leykis is a professional in the same sense that Heidi Fleiss was a professional.

Re: actually...

I used to listen to him in Phoenix when he did normal talk radio.

However nowadays, his show sucks.

Phil Hendrie owns Leykis, have you ever heard him do his scathing "Combover Boy" satires?

I guess Leykis would be good to listen to if I was still a horny 16 year old.

In what market does Phil H own TL??

C'mon I sort of agree with Crusty Bob's take.... Leykis himself has admitted he is a media "(BLEEP)". But I don't believe Phil Hendrie has ever beaten Tom in the ratings esp when they were on head to head in LA. Tom's act is old but there's ALWAYS a new crop of adolescent young men discovering Leykis 101 so TL will continue to prosper until he qualifies for Social Security. I liked him a whole lot more when he was on KFI and also 710 Talk in LA.

EDIT: LOL, you guys edited the word bleep and let other stuff go by??? hmmmmmmmmm
Edited by SuperRadioFan on 10/26/05 08:07 PM.

Well said Crusty Bob, well said.

Re: In what market does Phil H own TL??

He owns him in quality.

Tom goes on, with his phoney exaggerated radio voice and talks about stuff that interests people 40 years younger than him, how pathetic is it to be in your 50s, and have to act like a 16 year old boy on the radio?

Phil does original bits, good talk and puts on a hell of a funny show every night and does some pretty sophisticated schtick and some pretty good lowbrow stuff from time to time. But, what I love about Phil is, he tells the audience its all schtick, its all show, and that all the other radio guys are full of crap when they pretend they are serious.

You can have Leykis, Combover Boy is a hack.

Spam

Hey, Mr. "I have all of three posts", let me advise you of one of the rules around here.

Making the same post on multiple boards is considered "spam".

And I note the same amount of disparaging remarks about Leykis here as on the San Francisco board.

Go play somewhere else, please.
______________

You know? It didn't even occur to me that it was spam until now...
So lets talk about Leykis on in San Diego. Wasn't he once on KSDO in the evenings? Or am I thinking of KFI?

Like those of us in broadcasting have never used that word at some point after some situation (teeheehee).

Spam?

Here's a counter point:

Is it really "just" spam if it sparks a legitimate discussion relevant to the topic/scope of the board?

Perhaps Mr Anonymouse is just excited, and since the show is coming on in both places, seems it would be fair game to post in both places?

Also, as a former board mod to another, I know this place is full of "personalities" but is it really a good example to set as a mod to talk down to your users? There was a time when you and I had "3 posts" too...

Just my 2c

Peace

Someone drank the koolaid

OH GOD why did you have to bring up that guy?

This is sure to get me attacked but Phil Hendrie is a pud imho and his show is almost totally unlistenable. Just my opinion. I just about threw a party the day they dumped his butt off the station where I live. First of all what is entertaining about listening to a radio guy spend all night talking to himself? I think that should be left to the shows who really do have no real callers, and there's plenty of those already, or is that how he came up with that schtick? The single most irritating thing about it though (well between the "rag head" political rants I don't recall being an interesting component of "satire") is how he is *CONSTANTLY* hawking all the cheesy swag wares for sale on his website. Damn Phil I know you agreed to take less for pay in order to get on so many more stations out the gate (most of which have dropped you) but do you really need to be pumping that godforsaken e-store every 15 seconds?? The whole show is like unending hours of a Phil Hendrie Web Store" infomercial peppered with bouts of multiple personality disorder!

What can I say? To each their own. If you like him that's great, keep him in your town because he failed hard in mine! One thing I will say about the whole Phil/Tom thing, When Phil came on vs Tom, Phil went on air and crowed how he was going to "ram my greased fist up his a**" in the ratings... SO where'd you go Phil??? Tom seems to still be rolling on like an afternoon juggernaut in LA (or is this one of those 'maintain your greasy fisted honor in Podunk' things?)

Leykis sucks

Phil is original and does great theatre, Tom is a worn out perv who is reduced to creating an audience out of oversexed teens, how pathetic is that? Even when Tom did straight talk it was the same old theatrical crap with no substance. Yeah Phil does hawk lots of crap, its damned annoying, but at least he isn't some pathetic fat old guy pretending to be hip and cool. Tom reminds me of a perv uncle who carries around nude polaroids of some chick he banged in the 70s and shows them to kids to look cool.

But, go ahead, listen to Tom, call him up all giggly and ask him to "blow you up!", maybe you can meet him at a streetcorner with the radio station van and get a bumpersticker, or have him sign your girlfriend's rack!

Jeezus, I'd rather hear kittens being strangled than that obnoxious hack.

besides

Who needs Leykis, Phil can do a dead on impression of him, no one would know the difference.

Legend, I think Phil is GREAT and I can't stand Leykis anymore. You're right pathetic that TL's audience doesn't know how much they are being played like a fiddle hah!! THAT is where I'M coming from!!!
I was just talking about ratings!!
because I AM TED BELL

Re: besides

Re: Leykis sucks

Is that what they're calling it these days?

> Tom is a worn out

Phil spends endless hours arguing with himself in made up voices like someone who's been alone in a small booth far too long, ranting about various ethnic groups and political agendas, and pleading with the one listener who's on waiting for the Jointritis number at break to buy something from the e-store, Tom's pulling 7 figures and could retire any time he pleases to spend the rest of his life a multi millionaire traveling to various wine countries for fun. You decide...

> Even when Tom did straight
> talk it was the same old theatrical crap with no substance.

"Same old theatrical crap with no substance"

And yet Phil's "theatre" of made up people is somehow of more "value"?

> Yeah Phil does hawk lots of crap, its damned annoying, but

No, he's a pathetic old fat guy who can't even get away with pretending!

I agree one could take away all sorts of perceptions based solely on his on air persona...

My my is that hostility I sense? Honestly I'm not a big listener of his show, at least not the weekday show. I do catch myself listening to the wine tasting show on weekends. It's a whole different 'voice'. I have indeed met Tom on about a dozen or so occasions, but not having anything to do with his radio show. He was a client of a company I worked for for a while. You'd never imagine but he really is a pretty remarkable guy in real life, no '70s girlfriend photos, no gold chains with disco shirt, NO COMBOVER either. He is actually one of the most professional and dare I say likeable of individuals I've dealt with in radio or any other form of 'celebrity' for that matter, which is partly why I felt compelled to comment. I can only tolerate his weekday show in small doses, but still, I think I would rather listen to "the boys" asking to be taken out any style on endless loop than to hear one more minute of that g*daam Phil Hendrie show!

> Jeezus, I'd rather hear kittens being strangled than that
> obnoxious hack.

To each their own!
