Yeeee Haaaaaa- Austin Ratings

Rating are out and it shows the top two stations in Austin are KVET and KASE. What a difference 80 miles makes.

The Austin DMA includes the following counties: Travis, Bastrop,
Caldwell, Hays & Williamson. So, the metro may or may not be decidedly
country the surrounding counties may certainly be. All those counties
are part of the sampling survey for the Austin metro.

I really like KVET a lot.

I don't listen to KVET. But, i'm inclined to listen on the weekends
to hear Anne Hudson. After watching her on ME Television, i wonder if
her radio on-air talents are as fantastic as her on-air tv ablities.
She is truly a great find.

Yea I agree with Gibby about the Demographics. Austin within the city limits, I do not believe demographicly is heavy on country rather than the suburbs especially Williamson County to the north and the other surrounding areas has a good size population that listens to country.

> What a difference 80 miles makes.

And down here in SA, we have the Mayor and County Judge trying to convince the Florida Marlins owner and Major League Baseball to consider San Antonio and Austin to be part of the same metro area.

They are two very different media markets and this certainly demonstrates it vividly.

Hardly. Both markets support minor league baseball teams rather comfortably and have a number of sports outlets in radio and TV.

SETTLE THE FK DOWN!!! Regardless how many of the diaries/calls went out to counties around Austin, more than likely, most were completed within the city limits. Besides, there's nothing wrong with Country being the Top format in Austin for the last year or so.

Anyways, how well will a full Classic Country station do in Austin?

One of the local radio stations in SA did a "man on the street" segment in downtown Austin this week. People they interviewed said that the traffic to get to Round Rock has gotten so bad that they don't go to the games anymore. Someone else said they'd dropped their season tickets to Round Rock because of the traffic. The traffic to get to SA from Austin is even worse and the trip is longer.

I love baseball and I'd be happy to see a major-league team come to town, but I just don't think MLB would be a big enough draw to last here without support from Austin.

To get this somewhat back onto a media-related topic, the Marlins are saying now that they'd need a broadcast TV contract to make the move work. My guess is they'd want a TV deal in Austin, too.

MLB would definitely like to include the Austin market but they also want Northern Mexico to be included in the TV package.

I think KVET is probably one of the best localized programmed radio station in Texas wished other radiostations would take some pointers from them.

They need to get Belo on board. KBEJ is a "must carry" for cable in both cities.

KBEJ isn't must-carry in Austin. The only reason it ended up on the cable lineup here is because Belo agreed to turn over some advertising time to Time Warner Cable. Time Warner was not going to carry UPN 2 here ... even after Austin lost its UPN affiliate. (Cox Cable, which covers Georgetown and other parts of Williamson County, has never carried KBEJ.) And now there's speculation KBEJ, which will become a CW affiliate, could disappear from Time Warner's Austin lineup this fall if KNVA, Austin's WB affiliate, partners with CW instead of MyTV. After all, there's no need for 2 affiliates of the same network ...

Did that SA reporter note that the Roundrock area is not only growing exponentially, but the surrounding towns in that area are expanding at an equal, if not faster rate? The drive is a straight shot up 35, a right turn on 79, then another left turn at the ballpark. Austinites bitch about traffic. That's what we do. We save salamanders and bitch about traffic. I lived in SA for over 20 years and would give anything to have two loops around the city up here. The infrastructure is abysmal at best.

If they put the ballpark up around Schertz, I would have NO problem making the 50 minute drive to SA to watch games. It takes my just as long to get up to Round Rock for Express games because I live on the south end of town. But I still make the games when I'm able.

And I would sure as anything make the trip to SA to watch MLB.

I could have sworn seeing headlines that Time Warner lost it's petition to not carry then KBEJ. I could be wrong as I often am. It was just a thought. It would be a shame not to get the Marlins because of a screwy TV deal.

Well I live in South Austin myself and I can tell you I will not drive 50 miles to see a baseball game in SA and I know alot of people who wouldn't either. The only games I see right now are the Austin Wranglers because they are in the downtown area for now but if they end up building a stadium up north of the city I wont be going to see them either.

It really depends how much a person is into the team/baseball.

Country has been the top format in Austin for the last 14 years or so. KASE has been in the top one or two slots all that time with pretty much only KVET knocking it off. Also, I think KVET does a pretty good job of filling that classic nitch.
