Yes, another KFRC thread

Some little items that are bugging me:

On the morning show; Dave Sholin will say a guest is 'stopping by' to pay a visit. But that guest is actually calling on the phone. That is not stopping by. He should say, said 'guest' will be checking in. But then that segment is repeated the next hour.

Also, "Getting the band back together". Enough of saying that. It looks like everyone is in place. There is no need to continue saying that statement.

Will John Mack Flanagan get to produce any othe V/O's? Let him do another Legal ID! C'mon, mix it up a little.

That's it for now. Let's see this SF board come to life!

Hello!!! Remember me?? Thank you 106_KIFR for mentioning my ID on KFRC. I believe they are right to use one voice, and one voice only, to position the station. Why have a different voice on the ID? I did a new ID to run now, but it was forced and "puck-y". Remember I haven't voiced in almost 8 years! The parade has not only passed, it's waaay down the road! I don't really want to do things that aren't first rate. Listen to my old stuff, it's far from perfect, but I tried my best and there was always a lot of love there. Today it's a whole different world. It's all about smoke with no mirrors. That's why radio struggles so. I worked 350 watt daytime am stations ("K-10" in Slayton, Texas and "K-HIT" in Tucson...) and those stations had LIFE to them. Today there's a ton of technology, but as Barry Gordy of MOTOWN would say, "There's not much between the grooves". Can I tell a little story? Everyone likes my stories...(God I've missed doing this. People that love Radio, turn me on.) Mike Preston will love this one: (p.s. I saw Mike today at KFRC...) The story: Todd Rundgren's song, "Hello It's Me" when it came out originally and I played it, I sold the hell out of it. "This is OUR SONG." "Todd's singing it for YOU & ME." "THINK OF ME! IT's OUR SONG". Well, one day a woman called me, and she said "John, I was in Denver Friday night" (I'm rubbing the goosebumps away as I type this...) "I heard "Hello It's Me" and it made me miss you so much! I just wanted to talk to you and couldn't wait to get home." I swear I wanted to kiss her on the lips! Anyway, the new KFRC played "Hello It's Me" and I wonder if anyone remembered it was our song? -John-

"ALWAYS good to hear from you JMF!"

Absolutely. John - what little we've heard of your work lately sounds fine. I didn't hear what you did that you say was "forced and pucky" (I think you probably meant "pukey"...but if you'll pardon some advice from somebody who knows nothing in a professional sense about radio or announcing - just SPEAK. Aside from being a great jock, you have a naturally great voice - one of the best in the business, in my opinion. I'm sure you could do voiceover work if you wanted to.

I don't know if you remember my story on this board about a commercial you did for a business I owned many years ago - but it was terrific. You were on KCBS-FM at the time.

I also remember your commercial work for "WD"...which was a tire store, if I remember correctly. I can still hear it in my head.

You should do what makes you happy, but as a fan - I hope we get to hear you on air more often, and I'm sure most of those who post here would agree with me.

JMF is a true original. AND he should be doing the VO for KFRC...But that would be KFRC's Call and JMF's too. I belive I made that suggestion a few months ago. Preston must have missed that post ;)

The guy that they have on now just sounds like a smart ass who is talking down to the listeners. He is the same guy who does some of the VO stuff for KNBR. But what's really lacking is any sort of creativity in the image liners. Just bad writing! Both things are a tune outs for me. But then that's me.

KFRC is, in my opinion, a NEW STATION with old Call Letters. It is what it is... It is definatly NOT what it was...

Now lets play Elton John....AGAIN !

Production Boy said:
But then that's me.

Finally something from Production Boy I agree with. He's right, it's his opinion.

Read JMF's post. He's not ready to do more or isn't happy yet with how he sounds. Whether you or I like it, he has to be satisfied that he sounds great. I bet if he wants to do more, they'll let him.

Now, let's talk about all that really creative and compelling imaging with the fabulous writing we hear on KGO.... :D

KGO#1 for 28+ years. Talent is what drives a radio station, not liners.
But thanks for the cheap shot...I'm sure you feel better now. :D

I did read JMF's post...Did you read mine? I think JMF is JUST what KFRC needs, a Classic Voice For a classic station. But as I said before, since you missed it the first time..That would be KFRC's and Johns call. And once again that's only My Opinion.

It is also my opinion (not an order) that John should/could be doing what Bobby Ocean has been doing for years, making Big Money with His Big Voice and talent. But that would be JMF's Call too. I don't speak for him, nor do you.

But John, if you are reading this, please consider it, you would be a $uperstar !!!

Always nice when CBS management responds to a post.

Thanks everyone for not shooting me full of holes...My feelings about Radio are so mixed...from the age of 11 til I started behind a mic at age 17, until about age 48, I loved Radio so much. I couldn't believe what a great job it was! Payed to party and have FUN! How lucky can a guy get? Then, wham! Wham! Wham! layoffs, after more layoffs (some not so pretty...) and slowly the love fades away. Then it took a year and a half to find something else to do, but I've been blessed; I have been able to spend my working years doing things I LOVE. I'm so happy now. My voice doesn't feel what it was, but then again, I don't use my voice like I did, everyday. The Beatles stuff is very hard for me. My voice aches after 15 pages of narration every week, plus the concentration on inflection and delivery. In short, it's work! But, I'm so grateful to be part of the new KFRC. If they had started without me, it would have broken my heart. I really do feel part of the place. I don't care if the run the smartass voice guy (all the time? EVERY break weekends!!!). KFRC is back! That's all I care about, they can do what the want, anything they want, just Keep Freely Radiating Cheer... Hey! How about since Motown Monday is back, they bring back "Beatles Wednesday"? I do all the voicing and promote the Saturday & Sunday Beatle shows. (I can be a smartass too! hee hee) -John-

Im not real thrilled about the new KFRC,, They should seriously look at going back to 3 hour slots,, 5 hours is too long,, and to not include JMF on the air is a big mistake, CBS doesnt impress me at all! It is amazing to me that the two guys who put KFRC where its at arent on the air those two John Mack Flanagan and Bobby Ocean! I swear XM must have ties with CBS,, They both no longer employ him!!! Personnally I would rather have JMF 9 till noon and Bobby Ocean noon till 3pm!! The 70s channel on XM is a total bore without Ocean!! I guess John Clay at XM and Preston at KFRC know best!! September 17th, 1973 thirty four years ago today I arrived in San Francisco from KRIZ in Phoenix. I had worked KTKT in Tucson for 3 1/2 years, a lifetime in those days! Then the company transferred me to Phoenix where I programmed KRUX and finally I went across town to KRIZ before leaving to come to the Bay Area. Michael Spears called me in Phoenix and told me I had the job. I was THRILLED!!! I couldn't believe I would be on the air here. I had gone to Vietnam through the Oakland Army Base and Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield but never believed I'd live and work here, and I never expected to be here 34 years! Every day here is shiny and new. I never take anything for granted. I moved so much in the early days, I used to tell people I should have owned a u-haul trailer. My wife and I (we got married right out of high school, in Juarez Old Mexico, and then again in the states) we lived in Roswell New Mexico (our hometown...) La Mesa (Meesa) Texas, Slayton Texas, Tombstone Arizona (during the Vietnam experience I was a U,S. Army Draftee) Huachuca City, Arizona (I was stationed at Ft. Huachuca /Wa-chew-ka) then Tucson after my tour in Vietnam (1968) Phoenix and finally San Francisco. KFRC put us up at the Westbury Hotel near Union Square (I think it's now the Holiday Inn Union Square) and I remember so clearly walking down Bush Street from Powell to 415 Bush and feeling the butterfly's in my stomach, and hearing the sound of the cable car bells I was a nervous wreck! My first shift was in the Rainbow Room conrol room with board operators. You didn't touch anything. George Zema from KFRC swears he ran my board on my fiirst shift. People opened their heart to me, a nobody from nowhere. My daughter Kelly was just 3 months old, and a tiny thing. Now she's 34 with a daughter of her own. The wheel of life does turn. We've been in our house 32 years so San Francisco is really home. I'm grateful everyday for my experiences here. I NEVER take any day for granted. I finally came into some money (thank you KFRC!) so my memiors are on the way. Called "Superhit Highway" it tells the story of a guy who barely go out of high school but went on to a 36 year two month career in Radio. I'll let you know when it's out. David Jackson is editing for me. Thanks, each and every one of you. I may question my love for Radio, but I'll never question my love for the people who turn it on. -John-
