Yes FM Lubbock in HD?

Wow! I may have to eat crow on that other post.

They are indeed in HD on 97.3.

No HD2.

Very interesting. I'm curious why Ramar would take 97.3 digital and not 107.7.

Perhaps more HD is in store? And my follow-up question would be WHY?

Still doesn't change the basic math that no receivers are locally available.

I too am wondering why. There are receivers available. I saw a few car stereos at Best Buy that had built in HD. That being said, not many consumers except for us technology geeks want to go out and replace "analog" radios so we can listen to HD. If I were to take a poll, I bet majority of consumers never have heard of HD Radio. Consumers simply see nothing wrong with the way radio is now (or perhaps they are listening to iPods or Internet radio more).

Maybe it's just me but Ramar seems to like trying new technology (and I guess, KOHM too since they were the first and only HD station until now!) before other Lubbock radio stations. I believe they were the first ones that started using scrolling RDS on their stations (and sure enough, other LBK stations started to follow. First, Townsquare and now even Wilks just added RBDS to KLLL and im sure will probably add it to KBTE, KMMX, and KONE soon.)

Ramar had been carrying Double T 104.3 on 96.9 a week or so ago and 107.7 The Eagle on 97.7. As of yesterday, both of those translators have been silent.

That's a good point. I received an email notification that Ramar is putting in a new STL to somewhere SW of Lubbock.

They're up to something methinks, but that's a good thing. I'm glad someone on the commercial side is finally getting into the HD game in Lubbock. Only took them 6 years to follow KOHM's lead.

I did think of one reason they might be getting into HD: BTC, the Broadcaster Traffic Consortium. BTC provides news, traffic, weather and other data to properly-equipped radio display units via HD Radio. BTC's Paul Brenner spoke at TAB last week and mentioned they were expanding their service out to markets 160. I think Lubbock is like market 172, so it wouldn't be too far-fetched to see them adding Lubbock to their service. And HD stations providing the BTC data to their local market do get paid for doing so, but not enough to justify going HD I think. Still, the service BTC provides is pretty cool, but again, the major hiccup is the lack of receivers, and who's at fault when a driver gets distracted by what's on their radio screen.

I too have noticed the "explosion" in RDS services in the Lubbock market. Seems technological competition isn't dead in the Hub city yet, but I don't expect the others to add HD anytime soon...
