Yet another change at AM 830

When it comes to format changes we all think of 103.1 and 1260 as two immediate candidates for that past time. But mabye you've never heard of 830. A station that never has shown in the ratings until this recent book, it has been everything from Kids Format to Really Jacked Up AM that also had someone brokering dance for a time to Catholic Radio to 6th rate AM talker to most recently Radiovisa. Well, say bye bye to Radiovisa, they're closing shop and 830 will yet be sold again. I say sell the thing to Salem or Calvary Chapel. Either company could have a offering to move some programming over and for 107.9 move more in a music direction or in Salem's case allow them to shift KKLA to AM, move the Fish to a full Market signal(99.5) and then do a ninche christian music deal on 95.9 like Rock or CHR.

But someone else will probably get this frequency to "try something they are SURE will work this time".
______________

I can envision the Satellite Sisters, Matt and Ramona, and the Dream Doctor... talk radio for women. I'm sure THAT would work. :)

Where are you, Bonneville?

I doubt Salem would move the FISH to a full market signal unless it was something other than KKLA, but it's a great idea that's been brought up a lot over the years. They would probably make a good showing on a biggger signal. But they make an awful lot of their money with the shows they sell at KKLA, so it would take some convincing, and 830 am doesn't quite cover the same area too well... A great idea though...

If we want to get into big signals underperforming - I think 99.5 and 105.1 come to mind. Both of those formats could be on Class A's. Although I applaud Saul for keeping KMZT alive with Classical - and keeping his integrity instead of going into a general market format that could generate big revenue.

I see 95.9 as a perfect signal for KFSH. I don't know that it would do much more than a 1.0 share even on a full stick. I agree with Josh that KKLA would work great on an AM (how about 1580)???

Here's an idea for a format...

How about classic country? A format we have not seen in Los Angeles since the early to mid 90's. KLAC did it before their first standards appearance and they were about # 12 in the rankings.
______________

KZLA is barely surviving. I do not think there is a chance for a country niche format. The Toad in Riverside barely makes the book with a similar format.

For what it's worth, classic county didn't work in Nashville
when WKDF tried it (with a half classic-half currn mix).
WSM-AM plays classic country...but there IS that whole Opry thing.
Listeners may say they want to hear the old stuff, but reality
proves otherwise. It's like finding a stack of your old LPs you thought
were lost: it's cool to hear SOME of them again...but you really won't
keep playing them. The novelty wears off quickly.
As for KZLA...is "barely surving" accurate? How's their billing?
Serious question...not being critical.
______________

The billing is OK, but not great. It is highly umped by the record companies putting lots of money on it. Hoever, the shares are going lower and getting ohter revenue may be increasingly difficult. It has been growing through 2004, but the ratings were flat.... now they are down.

They bill aobut the same as KBUE.

Oh No. I want Salem to buy out 95.9 "the octopus" in Ventura County and simulcast 95.9 the fish. That way I can listen all the way into Santa Clarita and not lose the signal.

I want to buy it and turn it into a Christian Rock station

Got milk? Er, I mean, "got $40 million?" It's yours for that and your attorney fees!

Cox has had reasonable success in Houston with KTHT "Country Legends 97.1" on a rimshot signal that previously saw a long string of format failures.

But LA is worlds away from Houston psychographically, so Classic Country is probably a non-starter.

Re: Here's an idea for a format...

You're gonna laugh, but take it seriously for a moment: Hawaiian.
There's a huge population of expat Hawaii residents in the Southland (just look at the sheer number of Hawaii eateries popping up everywhere) and by far the majority of U.S. tourists in Hawaii come from California. Hawaiian music artists regularly sell out the Hollywood Bowl and other venues. Tower and Virgin Megastore do brisk business selling Hawaiian CDs. The Grammys recognized the genre for the first time this year, and Hawaiian artists like Israel Kamakawiwoole (he does that "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" rendition) have crossed over to the mainstream.
Hawaiian music dominates the top radio stations in the islands, so there's plenty of music and material. It's a niche that wouldn't work in many places, but would it work here, on a small level?

You just found 103.1's new format option!

(Can't get much more "small level" than that.)
______________

Why not? If 1260 could do it for a while, why not 830?

MUCH better signal throughout the OC too. I'd listen

Re:"Smoking Oldies 830"

Make that "Smoking Oldies 830"
like Ventura's "The Boomer"
830 AM even has a good signal in the Bakersfield area, not to mention the High Desert and into Arizona & Nevada a bit. You knew that 50,000 watt signal went somewhere! Just Not LA!

Wow, seems cheap. David, doesn't 830's 50kW daytime pattern put 60dBu into almost all of LA and most of the Inland Empire? Also IIRC, I was in San Diego a few months ago and DXed them (or something on 830... didn't get an ID) at night a little north of the city (20kW?). Seems like low stick value, but I'll defer to your expertise.
