yet another DRC post

I am what you would call a "flipper". I have a short attention span, and dont tend to stay on one station for too long.As a result I listen to different stations while in the car. Lately it seems that DRC has been tweaking thier format to the point that they seem to have lost focus, and have almost compromised any credibility they may have had. Lately they have had this bad habit of running thier hits of the 60's, 70's sweeper..and following that up with David Bowie, Billy Idol...(yep, they play mony mony now) or some other 80's pop hit. Mike and the mechanics have made it to the power rotation, kudos mike. It just reeks of desperation. Although it is priceless to hear Jack Carney backsell Blotto's "I wanna be a lifeguard"...okay maybe not yet, but soon. Anyone know what the hell the last book told them, that has them easing back to into thier previous pop format? Mike Stevens may count his blessing that they had mercy on him and canned him before this identity crisis....

Believe it or not.....members of BLOTTO recently played to a sold-out reunion show in Pittsfield, MA....where the group is originally from. Amazing.

Disclaimer: Nothing in the following post is not to be taken seriously.

No not the Jack Format!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Lord Have Mercy! (Well maybe if they went Jack POWER 104 wouldn't be the number 9 FM station in an 9 Station FM Maret)

If DRC does go with the JACK format, I'm gonna have to rob a bank, buy an AM station and put the oldies format there.

Once again nothing in the above post is to be taken seriously.

Hmm... you do know WFSB did a report yesterday about the increase of bank robberies in the state don't you?

They should go to a Jack (or Mike or whatever) format and call it DRECK (DRC sounded out.)

Then they should pull the woeful AM simulcast talk programs and go with a true oldies format.

On their home page is a letter from the PD,(under about us) alluding to the changes, and saying how exciting this will be for all of us..whoo hoo. But this bring me back to my original point. If this is ratings related, how is it that the station is losing numbers. I consider DRC and WWYZ two stations that would have a stronghold on the targeted audience, being that one is the only true oldies station in the state and the other is the only country station. If you want pop, you have KC101.KISS,WTIC..ETC...rock gives you PLR,WRKI,WEFX..and so on with other formats. if you want Kenny Chesney or Jay and the americans, you only have 2 choices. Could the audience for the oldies format be shrinking? (face it, hippies arent the healthiest people out there). Personally being in my late 30's, this is the music I grew up with, and when I do tune in, its only because I know that I will hear a song that I wont hear anywhere else.

Taking a look at their web site I no longer see any reference to big hits " ... of the 60's and 70's" along with hearing more 80's tracks in their rotation. Face it, it's another station going Kohler (a popular brand of toilets, how's that for a format name??)

When the AM's simulcasted "The Best Of Everything" (I loved it), evidentally, the ratings weren't there & Talk format gets bigger numbers.

Do you think flipping to RealOldies would give the AM's bigger numbers?

It's not unique here

You're definitely on the young end of the audience for the oldies format. You are not the only Generation X'er who might want an oldies fix, but baby boomers like me have really been the base of the format. The oldest boomers are about to hit 60 while the Gen X crowd is starting to cross that 40 mark. Many big advertisers see less results from their messages as an audience passes 50 or 55. Their buying patterns are more set. That happened with easy listening on FM and standards on big signal AMs 20-25 years ago. The audience is living longer than ever (unlike many of their rock icons), but return on the ad dollar is driving this change and it's happening nationwide. Many of my best years on air were in the oldies format, but changes are inevitable.

Boomers' listening patterns are also more set, but they're not going to sell out the Civic Center for an oldies show the way they did in the eighties. Some smaller stations may pick up the ball when the powerful FMs drop it, figuring any audience is better than none, but don't look for Bill Haley & his Comets to return in a big way to the Connecticut airwaves. On the plus side, oldies formats on satellite or internet radio less dependent on ads can really specialize in providing enough alternatives to please even the most diehard oldies fan.

I do. They're not going to get FM numbers, but I think they could have a very respectable showing.

DRC-FM is no longer an oldies station so the Greater Hartford market has no "oldies" on either AM or FM. But there's still a huge audience out there for this type of music and that audience is not as ancient as everyone believes.

And oldies are a natural on AM. The high fidelity, stereo sound of FM does nothing for an old mono 45-RPM. I'd loved to hear a locally produced, fast-paced, "Boss radio" approach to the format and see how it does. And by "locally produced" I mean within Connecticut. (No birds need apply.)

With DRC-AM simulcasting this on WMMW in Meriden, WWCO in Waterbury and WSNG in Torrington; it gives them a commanding presence in a huge area with NO COMPETITION!!!

Nice four-year-old thread being revived here.

Funny thing is, what we were all scratching our heads over in 2005 has pretty much become the 'DRC-FM of 2009: Toto's "Africa" into the Dell-Vikings' "Come Go With Me" into Andy Gibb's "I Just Want to Be Your Everything" into Aretha Franklin's "Think" into Sniff 'n' the Tears' "Driver's Seat." The only difference is that the pre-British Invasion music hasn't been totally eliminated, as it was when the station was tweaking like mad in 2005-06.
