Yet another example of corporate greed??

I don't know too much about Media One. But your assessment seems correct. I will do some research on this company to see what kind of track record they have with providing live and local radio in other markets.

I still believe Ray Hall should have been issued a reprimand from his PD and then asked to refrain from using such language over the airwaves again. If it happened a second time then yes, he should be canned.

Look, ANYBODY who's on the air - especially a talk show host - should know the FCC rules regarding language. In case you need a refresher, click here.

Uttering certain words during the "safe harbor" hours, whether they're part of a quote or not, is actionable. It only takes one complaint for the FCC mills to begin grinding toward a substantial fine. Whether that comes from a disgruntled moron, or the Archbishop of Jamestown makes no difference.

This is a profession, people. LEARN THE RULES, or be prepared to suffer the consequences.

Hall screwed up BIG TIME. Corporate decided that dumping him shows them to be a "responsible broadcaster" (stop laughing). If he's got enough of a following, it's time to get another gig, or put up a website and start blogging and podcasting. That will be MUCH more effective than any (legal) Part 15 - and easier to sell to advertisers.
 
What's Part 15 broadcasting have to do with Ray Hall?

I guess I believe people make mistakes and they should be given a second chance. Yes, he made a mistake and he should be held accountable but to lose his job over a single instance is absurd unless the FCC chooses to fine the station.
 
Is this the same Media One that owns/operates WREO-FM/97.1, WYBL-FM/98.3, WZOO-FM/102.5, WFXJ-FM/107.5, and WFUN-AM/970 in Ashtabula, OH under the name "Sweet Home Ashtabula"?

Does WJTN feature any other local radio shows? Was Ray Hall's show the only one?
 
The corporate thinking, William, is if they FIRE him, they're likely to pay a SMALLER fine.

If a formal complaint was filed, corporate will be out legal fees at the very least, and very likely a fine in the thousands of dollars. This is a lot more than an "oops". This is an expensive blunder.

Got off on a tangent that was indirectly related to the situation resulting from his firing. Less local on air talent. Point noted about the firing. Unfortunately, that does make sense in the corporate way of thinking.
 
To answer keystone.doug's questions...yes, it's the same company that recently purchased the Ashtabula cluster you referred to. As far as other local programming on WJTN...there are two local morning shows that air during the week, plus it's pretty much the only station in Jamestown where you can get in-depth local news reports. WJTN also has about five hours or so of local programming on Saturdays and a number of local religious programs on Sundays.

To address other points mentioned in this thread...Ray never cursed since reading that legal document on the air, and management did suspend him for one week as a result of that cursing, the suspension coming about two weeks or so after said cursing occurred. And I have also found out from someone close to the station that no one has yet filed a formal complaint to the FCC.

However, I do know that there was one person that has been threatening to file a formal complaint, the notorious caller "Michael" as he was known to faithful listeners of the Hall Closet. I mentioned this in another post in another thread...but for those of you who haven't seen it, I suspect that this person played a devious role in getting Ray Hall's show off the air. I'm still trying to gather some more information on the matter, and hopefully I can give you the lowdown as soon as I can.

Well, I recently found out that Hall is writing an online blog for the Post-Journal, Jamestown's local newspaper. And he's getting a lot of reaction from his posts, too. Also...I'm not exactly sure, but I think he's doing late afternoon commentaries on another radio station in Jamestown.

And one other thing...after going on an intense fact-finding mission (not to mention doing a bit of legal research), I have come up with a theory as to why "The Hall Closet" was discontinued. I'll soon be starting a separate thread dedicated exclusively to this theory...just as soon as I get all my facts lined up.
