Yet Another Hudson Valley Translator

Just tuning around this evening, I stumbled upon a new "Sound of Life" translator on 95.3, transmitting from between Poughkeepsie and Kingston with Highland as City of License. The signal is not too good in the Poughkeepsie area... seems to be directional to the SW, nulling both Kingston and Poughkeepsie.

Sound of Life is already heard on a half dozen or so frequencies, including the powerful main signal from Kingston on 89.7. This new translator is such a waste of spectrum.

I couldn’t agree more . I find it particularly annoying when I can receive the same station via translatorson several frequencies when the main station comes in just fine . They probably don’t have the manpower but the FCC should investigate weather the translators are really necessary , and not just rely on a engineer paid by the station to find a tiny pocket where their reception is less than perfect . Although they are not the only ones doing it -WAMC comes to mind , it seems that Religious stations what to hog frequencies in spots across the dial so you are likely to stumble across their message .

There goes getting PLJ from New York City. Hudson Valley radio is garbage. The only good stations in the valley are WHUD, WPDH, WGNY, and WSPK.

Another wasted space which I have mention many times before is getting Star 99.1 in NJ on 94.1 AND 106.5 in Newburgh. Why the need for two station and what does a Central NJ station have to do with the Hudson Valley!?

Hudson Valley radio is a pile of garbage! Now look what happened to WGNY-FM? They put a new translator on 97.3 in Poughkeepsie! Come on! This frequency is covered by "The Wolf" as a country station on 94.3 and 97.3. Don't we have enough translators in the HV listening area? It is run by those hogs being programmed on other frequencies. I hope that someday, we need another oldies station to be on other translators like WZCR's "Cruisin' 93.5" in the Kingston and in the Poughkeepsie listening area. Or maybe they should put CBS-FM on another translator on different frequencies like 106.1, in Poughkeepsie or on 102.9 in Kingston in the near future. I guess HV is still missing an oldies station to fill the gap. think about it!

For once I agree with you. Oldies is a hole that needs filling in the Poughkeepsie market . WCBS- FM would be the better choice of course . I listen to WCZR when I am up in that area and while not close to WCBS-FM in caliber it’s not a bad station and would like to be able to listen to it at home . However picking up their signal off the air in Poughkeepsie is a problem . They have a poor signal that never reached Poughkeepsie even before 93.3 WBEZ came on the air .

What I want to know is why this "Z-Rock/WBWZ" is only on-air three days a week

We are talking about 2 different Z- Rocks , The original Z rock was a commercial ,mostly satellite fed service , that was on WBWZ 93.3 when it first signed on the air . The current Z- Rock 102.5 is a low powered pirate station and like most stations of this type are run out of the operators pocket and must maintain a low profile from the FCC ,since they are illegal . Most pirate stations have a limited broadcast schedule .

OH alright, makes more sense now. The pirate is broadcasting out of the Arlington/Town of Poughkeepsie/Fairview area. We triangulated it over the summer out of curiosity.

They're only on 4 days, i guess

The Z-Rock pirate does not seem to be broadcasting from the Arlington/Fairview area... in fact their signal is kind of weak (although audible) in that area. I've been meaning to track them down, but I just haven't gotten around to it. And I don't have triangulation equipment. However, casual observation seems to indicate that are out towards Hopewell Juntion, probably a bit to the North or North-west of Hopewell Jct.

Star 99.1 from NJ used to have a translator on 106.5 AND 94.1 in Newburgh. Now the 94.1 translator has been shut off for couple of weeks now. Anyone know what happened? (Not like I'm complaining or anything). It opens up 94.3 from Kingston and 93.9 from NYC plus it's one less station on the dial for good dxing in Newburgh.:)

My first post here...I agree about your comment on the AM's having translators. So much talent and GOOD radio on the AM dial........very sad to see how AM has changed in my 24 years in the business. Very sad indeed....

I thought having Star 99.1 on BOTH 94.1 and 106.5 was a total waste of spectrum, and as a DXer, I'm glad is 94.1 is off. It may just be technical problems, and they could resurface real soon. Or maybe they are preparing to relay a different station. With 94.1 off, the Thunder Country Orange County relay on 94.1 comes in clearly here in the Poughkeepsie area, and with my antenna rotated East, 94-HJY from Providence, RI is now heard. With the 94.1 Newburgh translator on, it took some good summer conditions for HJY to come through.

Isn't there a translator for sound of life in Newburgh on 88.3? What a disgrace.

It would be nice if CBS-FM was on 94.1. 101.1 comes in okay in Newburgh, but it would be nice for a much crystal clear signal on the clock radios and stereos.
