They have a 24 hour news operation or "center" as they call it on the air? PLEASE. Doug "I rant and cannot pronounce names" McIntrye and newsperson (using the term loosely) T-Rae "Always Mumbles" Elmer were simply overwhelmed. Could not handle it. No other KABC news personnel on air, certainly none reporting from the field. They relied on watching TV - wonderfully stupid KTTV-Fox.
My direct knowledge and memory of years ago at Metromedia-KLAC/KMET can remind others that in those glory days before we knew any better, we had real NEWS OPERATIONS. KLAC had a parking lot filled with marked news cars and the professionals to work them and report from the field well and often. And Two-Way Radio really was alive! And so many great people worked in a crowded, busy, active, cackling newsroom on Wilshire Boulevard.
Real news/talk radio. And what else? We had the newsroom covered 24/7 and field people out all the time. What a wonderful place to learn what radio could be. Always grateful to Larry McCormick - great radio guy who was a mainstay at KTLA for many years.
But KABC? Please. Play that tape of that shipwreck of that morning with confused Doug and always befuddled (and mumbling) Elmer. A joke.
And if you look at the discussion board for New York, appears WABC is as bad or worse than KABC. Frankly, I don't think it possible.
Put doug back to overnights puh lease!!!
