Yet *ANOTHER* terrible move by the Eagle

Sports has more revenue sources than pure music

And sports has a MUCH HIGHER payroll.
When the top 10 stations are billing between $10 million and $16 million, the payroll does not seem so burdensome.

3 of the top 5 billers are talk based stations. And the 11th is talk, too.

Did you do a perceptual study to validate your claim that another sports station here is gonna knock it outta the park.

Please tell me they've thought more past "The Old Grey Wolf".

Please tell me there was SOME SORT of market analysis that said there was a thirst for yet another sports station - and one that airs the MAVS GAMES!

THE MAVS AND RHYNER FOR THE WIN YOU GUYS!

THREE OF THE TOP FIVE.

You said it yourself there. If you are ranked in the top 5, who cares about payroll.

When you're starting at 28th, and by month 6 they will know they effed up - so then payroll will be a massive issue.

I'm positive they are looking at a 12 to 24 month growth plan. And if they hope to jump in and bid for some play by play rights, it might be three years or more. In the meantime, they can jump in and seek some of the sports marketing dollars that are different from straight ad campaign dollars.

ARE WE SURE THIS ISN'T A STUNT?

LIKE - IT JUST CAN'T BE REAL.
Stop yelling. It's real, it has been announced and they are doing client presentations.

You . . . think . . . that they . . . are gonna wait 3 years with dismal - at best - ratings, for some chance at - now I think YOU are pranking me. I don't know what's real life anymore.

We had that discussion about the rock station in Atlanta carrying Braves baseball, and it wasn't true. The station ratings didn't improve once the Braves deal was over.
That's because those listeners were already gone and were satisfied with the alternatives they found. If you look at WNNX's ratings immediately after the Braves moved from 106.7, you'll see they dropped like a rock (no pun intended).

Listen here David, just let me whine! Don't step in with logic.

How long have they waited with this situation? How long have they been paying staff who have been just watching the boat go down? They all had sufficient time to fix the music, fix the talent, fix the imagine, or whatever the problem was. This is the result.

Take a look at the bigger picture: Every other station that iHeart owns in Dallas is making money. Some more than others. They have three stations in the Top 10. They can afford to float one station for a year or two. Heck, that's what they've already been doing with KEGL. But at some point you have to cut and run, and recognize that you're just wasting time with this format in this city and with this staff. So that's when you start looking at alternatives. And yes, I promise you that ratings will go down when this change happens, and they may stay down for a while. All that has been factored in. They call that making an investment. And hopefully, at some point, the new crew does a better job than the previous crew.

How far out do other stations do client presentations for new formats? They’re not just starting this week following the announcement are they? Also, in situations like this, what do you tell current clients?

Obviously the "Russ Martin's Call Screener with another guy who used to work with Russ Show" does not equal the Russ Martin Show. The Treehouse without the wild man who jumps up and says something outrageous is like waiting for the punchline that never comes.

Flipping the station to syndicated sports talk from another city doesn't seem that interesting either. But bringing in an old local greybeard like Mike Rhyner who also plays in a local rock band? Now you got my attention!

Maybe you could supplement that with a Best of Russ Martin Show on Saturday night along the lines of the Art Bell Lost in Time Show to bring some of the old audience back to the station to see what Rhyner is going to do with it. You could even bring Dan O'Malley back once a week to host the thing. Of course you would have to edit out he who will remain nameless for getting arrested for something unspeakable. But that could be done.

This whole process is why stations don't like to change formats. This is why is costs so much money. Because current clients either get refunds or they get time on other iHeart stations. Or perhaps they like the direction the station is going. But the station won't have data on the new format for a while. And it's hard to sell something that isn't yet on the air. So it's an investment, and it will take a while. All that has been factored in. Fortunately the other stations in the cluster are doing well. It's not like the whole cluster is a wreck.

I gotcha! In my experience, I’ve told clients two weeks out and they were like, “okay great!” But, in my situation it was a medium sized market AM classic country we were flipping from. The most drastic change I had the most questions about when 97.1 in la changed to amp radio many years ago!

KEGL's ratings have only gotten bad within the past 9 to 12 months or so. That said, Russ was clearly the star of the station.

The last time KEGL was without his services many years ago, the ratings tanked and they flipped to Sunny (soft AC).

I am a little surprised iHM is unwilling to go the Urban AC or Reggaeton routes. iHM has some marquee Urban AC stations in its stable. They evidently want a format that will be complementary to Lonestar 92-5.

If indeed the music disappears from 97.1, it wouldn't surprise me if 92.5 makes a small tweak, much like 103.5 did in Denver when 106.7 went Country.

I’m curious if B&S are pulling great numbers and thats what made I heart wide eyed about adding more talk
