If anyone hears this Jen Brien actually uttering a complete sentence while conducting her program on WRKO please note the date and time and try to provide the actual sentence, as I have made a wager that it will happen eventually, although probably through inadvertence.

She generally reaches the verb and then launches off on another subject entirely.

The party of the second part to the wager has insisted on a time limit, namely WRKO's format change to all brokered programming, so time is of the essence.

Clearly this ADD-fest needs a co-host.
 
I enjoy her too, but I have noticed some hosts do tend to change into another sentence before
finishing the first:

You're on the Sean Hannity show where today we're--oh by the way say hello to our latest affiliate W---- good to have you aboard--and speaking of (city) man oh man I was flying into (city) on Jet Blue, of course (PLUG) and the flight was fine but I get to the airport and (pounds fist on table)
Sweet Baby James do you know what it's like when you get to an airport, right, and they don't have any local newspapers left on the stands and, well I had to use my laptop to get the story about, er, oh, and Lobster Gram, we can't forget them. When you send a Lobster Gram you....
Sweet Baby James is laughing there in the control room. Why are you laughing? You...oh, you said I forgot to mention Sarah--yes, folks, Sarah Palin is on the show tonight and you don't want to miss it and we'll play a small excerpt in, in the third hour of today's (radio) show. We'll be right back.

(SCOTT SHANNON): Sean...Hannity is on...your radio...RIGHT now! :)
 
Howie is FAMOUS for this! He'll start giving out his phone number and half-way through it launch in to another thought. Sign of one having a ton of things on one's mind.

She's fine. Go pick on someone your size...
 
Yup Howie does do it on occasion...he even will mention the phone numbers even at the end of his show, which is crazy because RKO doesn't have a local show on again for about 11 more hours!
 
She's not fine. She is horrendous at the elements, executes poorly, takes incredibly nonsensical diversions in mid-sentence and is simply a poor broadcaster.

Some people just aren't ready to solo, and she's one of them.

Carr has problems that make professionals cringe as well, but they are outweighed by what he brings to the table in terms of the ability to attract and hold an audience. This woman brings no new insights, has no unique perspective, and has yet to develop her own persona, so there's nothing to save her from being a lousy broadcaster.
 
I came to the conclusion about a decade ago that a lot of talk show hosts basically have ADD and can get bored with one thing easily. Not all, but some :)

And on what major market talk station can we find your show? I really enjoy her. You seem to not be able to recognize talent.
 
Making yourself the judge of what's fine and what's not seems kind of silly especially with regard to a talk show. There really are no
"elements" that are important other than hitting your breaks. Talk shows are pretty much free form.

I ask the originator of this thread to explain in detail what the correct and proper elements are and examples of language and grammar used on air and what the differences are when compared to everyday conversation. Examples of proper usage would be appreciated.

There is the perfect solution for the type of problem. its very simple.
"TURN THE DAMN THING OFF"

I for one enjoy listening to her. She's fine.

I also would like to know what station your show is on and what are your qualifications and experience that allow you to make these judgements. I think you are forgetting that everyone is entitled to an opinion and just because it doesn't agree with yours doesn't make it wrong. Opinions are not right or wrong, everyone has one.....they're like.......well I won't go there.

I couldn't stand McPhee so I didn't listen. It's that simple.
 
That fact that someone doesn't have a talk show of their own shouldn't disqualify them from commenting on a particular host. I thought that was what this board was about.

As someone who produced talk shows for a major market station and worked in management at a major network I'll comment on her. I think she is fine for her time slot but overall I think she is pretty weak. I would prefer someone who had a little more life experience and a greater depth of knowledge.

She also looses credibility with me becasue she is a birther and blames all the worlds problems on illegal imigrants and welfare recieptients.

Given the dirth of talent, RKO didn't have much to choose from and I glad that a local person from the area got the job rather than bringing in an out of towner.

The last talk host that I thought really flurished in Boston was Gene Burns. And Jerry Williams was not from the area but everyoen since including Katz, Sevrin and Graham don't do it for me.
 
The elements in a talk show are very important. You need to draw them in, you need to keep them listening. You don't treat breaks as an interruption. You bracket the calls. You don't put people 'on the air' you put them on (calls). You never refer to the audience as a collective, you say "you" but never "you guys" or "everyone" or anything like that. You never say "we'll be back." You have command of an issue when you talk about it, you don't "throw it out" for discussion. You don't care whether anyone agrees with you and you never try to be loved. You milk the audience for one more quarter hour.

What we have here is someone desperately searching for an issue at the start of every program, and who literally begs for calls on the air. Her approach is "wadda ya think about (predictable knee-jerk take on an issue)? Call me?" It's bad radio. Worse, it's losing radio.
