You fools never get it do you?

nothing against woody... but it is the same situation

1989 was 20 years ago people

if it were up to me... i would kill any allifiation with ex staff, ex local staff, old logos, everything and all cut all ties

That's the trouble with radio. Most of the clueless which is about 75% have the above attitude. Oh my it's been 20 years you can't have this jock or that jock or this or that....bla bla bla....

Give me a station with a good signal and i will beat you with the best jocks,(old or young) the best music for my audience. The best marketing. Give me a decent promotional budget and i will beat you with creative compelling contests and creative marketing and yes i'll use old school thinking and old call letters if need be.

Old Call letters, old jocks, old contest can win when the CREATIVITY and COMPASSION Flows.

BossJock1947,

I like they way you think. Do I know you? After reading your posts in the past, it sounds like we went to the same "school." You always hit the nail right on the head. Keep up the good work, sir!!!

Call me strange, but I have been known to tear-up listening to a good air-check from 40+ years ago!

How about this... instead of calling us fools like we dont know anything and instead of looking elsewhere to other stations.... how about focus on the situation that the initial comment (made by me) spoke of?

You think this is such a good idea? Well i dont see KTFM billing very high nor do i see them atop the ratings.

Yeah maybe old calls, old jocks, old contest CAN win...

BUT THOSE CALLS ARE TAINTED! FACT: If they werent or if what KTFM is doing were any good... THEY WOULD BE WINNING RIGHT NOW! Are they? Sure the hell arent.

You want to talk down about the newer school of radio? Well its is ALSO the older generation that contribute to the issue. (HENCE THIS TOPIC OF DISCUSSION) You guys think that radio can be done over and over and over and over the same way and work every single time.

Step into 2009 friend. Things have changed. The listener has changed thanks to new technology. Radio has changed! Take a 24 year old woman in 1989 and compare her to a 24 year old woman in 2009. THEY ARE COMPLETEY DIFFERENT! Anyone with the mentality that a 20 year old strategy can win is the real fool in my book.

The KTFM calls would be great for a KTSA simulcast.

Yes, they would. And does anyone recall the cool ID from years ago for the 100.3 and 1150 AM simulcast? It went like this: "Q-100 KSAQ and KQ-AM, San Antonio."

It's all about getting back to the basics, folks. The newer way of thinking is the primary reason this business is in the crapper. When actual broadcasters start to run the show again, then we'll get back to the basics.

That's the simulcast that started off as K-BER AM/FM.
I'm old enuf to remember their rivalry with K-BUC AM/FM (now KAHL and KXTN.)
Back then KKYX was Middle-of-the-road KBAT and KAJA was Easy listening KEEZ.

And I'll bet 96.1 was classical KMFM, 92.9 was KITY, 930 was KITE, 104.5 was KEXL (and KITE-FM before that), 1480 was KAPE, 630 was KMAC, 105.3 could only be heard in and around Seguin, and the three main (if not the only) spanish-language radio stations in San Antonio were AM's KCOR, KEDA, and KUKA.

... And KISS was automated show-tunes, 101.9 was KCOR-FM playing elevator music, and KDRY was, as always will be, whatever the heck it is....

I never said you younger broadcasters were bad. I said "Fools" meaning ANYONE. KTFM tainted? HAHAHA...like i said young man, give me a talented bunch of jocks, a good signal, creative/compelling marketing/contesting play the music your targeted audience wants and walla!

Don't want contests. Waste of airtime. Give me a REAL Personality/Broadcaster, keep me laughing and entertained.

This isn't a reply from a young man; it's from someone with more than three decades in the radio business. The use of the word "fools" was over the top, in my opinion, but you actually make some good points. Excitement and creativity can and will make a difference even in 2009, and to me the KTFM call letters aren't "tainted." (One more thing: it's voilà, no similarity with that town in Washington, Walla Walla. Carry on.)

Just FYI, the points he makes are being executed daily my many top-rated Spanish language radio stations... except for the signal part. Newcomers have to make do with rim shot signals.
