You go WGOG!

Congratulations to them!

Slighly OT: I do remember them several years ago when they were known as "The Apple 96.3" playing Oldies. Further back in time (when I was a kid and lived in Wahalla from 1979-1981), I barely remember the Top 40 format that was on AM 1000.

(To this day, I still associate Fleetwood Mac's "Think About Me" to WGOG although it was a minor hit nationally from 1980 or 81. Guess it was because it was the most earliest memory that I have of me listening to Top 40 radio. ;D)

I never understood the switch to country! With 3 or more Class Cs doing country all the way around them, I never figured that one out! Isn't that the outfit that owns 680 in Sylva, and what about Frankin, NC??

I enjoyed the oldies format on Apple 96.3 also, I used to listen to WGOG whenever I was in Greenville or anywhere close to the Walhalla/Seneca area. I guess the country does well because it's geared to a local audience.

Only one of the Cs puts a 60 dbu over Oconee County and that is WESC.

Our research showed that WESC-FM had been number one in Oconee County for many many years. On Oldies, WGOG never ranked higher than # or #4.

Since going country, our ratings not only matched WESC but have even exceeded them on many occassions with the last book our best. The station's profit levels are the highest ever.

Running a successful small market radio station means giving the LOCAL audience what they like best thus providing the largest possible audience for local advertisers to reach. However, the bottom line on WGOG's success has not been its music but rather the local programming it offers between the songs....not the least of which is a solid local news department.

Yes, "that outfit" owns a number of stations...including the ones you referenced...found on this website:

It's president is Art Sutton...who posts frequently around here--including THIS thread ;).

I am really happy to see that they have done so well. I usually listen to them when I am in the Rosman, NC area because I cannot pick up WESC very well there and they really do a good job serving the community and am glad that they are still playing country and doing the good job that I have noticed them doing for the past several years.

I love these boards! It's great to see a real station get some props from the local print media, even if you have to twist the words around to make that county by county non metro breakdown sound more glamorous. Art is one of a handfull of broadcasters that command a lot of my respect because they know how to capture the ears and hearts of the communities they serve. If Cat Daddy would quit flipping formats, Baker would be putting out a press release just like this one in "The State". Congrats Sir Douglas Sutton

I know this is old news, but I do want to congratulate Gary, Wayne, Dick and the entire gang at WGOG!! They are a truly dedicated hard-working staff that provides quality news, weather, sports, advertising solutions, and all the other local elements to making a successful small market radio station.
::)
