"You got your Dr. Laura in my WIOD"

Rare oopsie for IOD yesterday. Don't know if it was a technical glitch or someone was asleep at the switch, but after the 3:00 news and commercials, WIOD began playing Dr. Laura. Apparently the satellite feed wasn't switched over from Premiere 1, which runs Rush, Dr. Laura, and Coast to Coast + all their re-feeds. Around 3:12 they finally switched it back to the WFLA satellite.

Indeed. One of the locals up here in Baja Ontario used to have that problem every couple of months or so. Never trust a computer to do a human's job, that's all I can say.

I thought IOD had guys who were in place in the afternoon hours to make sure all the feeds and relays were in place. They have to break into news and traffic reports.

Although a funnier screw-up was back a few months ago when it was time for The Schnitt Show, but the satellite feed from Tampa was broadcasting WFLZ-FM instead of WFLA. It turned out that the producer who had the duty of switching the station being broadcast when he came into the building, because the same satellite feed is used to broadcast Schnitt's morning show, ended up parking elsewhere and entering the building through another entrance, and forgot to push the button that changes the stations. So for about 2 minutes his network stations were playing pop music.

Back in 2003 I was an intern at a small AM station in suburban Hartford, Connecticut. I happened to be at the station talking with the GM about something. About 3:15PM the GM's wife who was the station's secretary, traffic manager, etc came in and said to the GM "Did you know we're off the air?" He was like "What do you mean we're off the air?" His wife said "I just got a phone call and was told we're off the air." The GM turned up the radio in his office and sure enough the station was off the air. His wife ran to the studio and discovered the automation computer had switched to the wrong satellite channel and was broadcasting a channel not carrying any programming instead of the Premiere Satellite Channel that was supposed to be carrying Dr. Laura.

That was funny the 3 of us at the station not knowing the station was off the air. To make matters worse I had my walkman tuned to the station with my headphones around my neck, but I had the volume level turned down to talk with the GM. And the GM's wife turned off the radio that's normally on in the lobby because her kids were watching TV.
