You Never Know What You'll Hear On WWZN

It's already been noted that WWZN-AM 1510 has turned over its midnight-till-6:00 am segment of the broadcast day to "Brother Stair's" ministry; now a casual observation of the 1510 dial spot has discovered more zany fare. From 9:00 to 10:00 am, there's a paid "nutrition" show called "Duke and the Doctor"; this pre-empts the first hour of Sporting News Radio's Tony Bruno after WWZN's morning drive show. During the evening (I'm not sure when it begins) they carry Roy Masters' program...a show that has worked wonders for WROL-AM 950! In doing this, WWZN mirrors former Sporting News Radio station WSNR-AM 620 in New Jersey. At the rate things are going, aside from some play-by-play, they may drop sports altogether.

I noticed that too... I can understand doing it overnight but it seems dumb to do it 9-10 AM. The morning show 7-9 is kind of a trainwreck but also fun to listen to. There's a new brokered sports show noon-2 but it's terrible. You think Andelman has a Mass. accent? Those guys are worse.

I've listened to Roy Masters (the boss of Michael Savage and Laura Ingraham) the other night before 11 on 1510 while searching for scores to find out if the Revs won (they did) after a night of working with Casablanca and almost getting caught by some of the managers checking for scores on the cellphone. Ergo I would speculate that Davidson is turning WWZN into a brokered religious station. :D

1510 in employing a good business plan.... Starts out as sports, and sports will remain during times that no bulk time is sold. In time (probably 6 months), most time will be sold, and little by little, sports programming will disappear (except for PAID-time sports shows), and it will morph into a fully brokered-time station. --resulting in a highly profitable station. 1510's superior signal (compared to the other 13 brokered-time stations) should significantly affect the other 13 stations' ability to sell all their time. Management of 1510 is on the right track for a successful station and in doing so, making airtime available to folks who want to do radio but can't afford to buy a station in a large market. However, a hopeful loss of self-appointed preachers and vitamin shows would give the station more credibility.

Heard tonight: Irish music. A show produced in NYC. The host was even heard to welcome The Zone
as a new affiliate and he looked forward to Irish-Americans from the area tuning in. (Ironically enough,
this same station used to carry a legendary NBA basketball team with an Irish-related name, a shamrock,
and a leprechaun...

Great business Plan and absolutely riveting programming!
That is the main reason why radio [EDIT] sucks these days.

Interestingly enough, this seems to take 1510 back full circle.

While many remember the golden days of WMEX (1510) when it was a rock and roll station from 1957 to the mid 70s, few remember that the original years of WMEX (1934 to 1957) was devoted to a variety of different programs, some of which--I believe--were brokered or purchased.
There were all kinds of political, special interest, live remotes, religious and foreign language shows on the station in those days. They were never affiliated with a network, so they had to fill every minute themselves.

I remember once reading a Boston-oriented article about the bombing of Pearl Harbor and what radio programs were interrupted for the bulletin.
WMEX was broadcasting a Norwegian program at the time!
