You Pay, We Play

One of my stations is doing a cool fundraiser this Friday for Relay for Life. It's KVOM-FM's 4th annual "You Pay, We Play," a 12-hour request show. We abandon the country format from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and take requests for a minimum $5 donation to the American Cancer Society (or $1/minute over 5 minutes). Many listeners give $20, $100, even $250 to hear their favorite. We jock it live all day - the donor can tell us what time to play the song and even dedicate it.

It's a great fundraiser and awesome for awareness of the Relay - because the jocks have to explain why all of the sudden they're playing AC/DC or Frank Zappa on the station.

So come on... stump us! We'll take your requests for donations at 800-467-5866! And if you're in earshot of 101.7 in Morrilton that day, listen for something that doesn't even compare to "Jack!" Where else can you hear Frank Sinatra immediately followed by Metallica?

Thanks!

Interesting. So, how do you collect the $$? Do you use pledge forms? All cash and checks I assume (Visa/MC?). Who does the collecting?

Even though we promo it for 2-3 weeks out, most folks wait until the day before or the day of to make their requests. They usually come by the station and pay with cash or checks made out to the American Cancer Society. Those who call or e-mail in requests are mailed a pledge form...

This makes a huge splash with the Relay folks. It's a great promotion for a small market station! Some have tied it to cause marketing, but we just do it to raise money and awareness. We've thought about adding a recorded phone dedication for extra $$ ... or doing it live at a car dealership ... but haven't because we're really stretched thin on that day anyway. It takes everyone working at the six-station cluster to pull it off.

FYI...Money's still coming in, but we hope to have raised $1K. It's hard to raise much more than that $5 at a time.

Weirest requests: "Louisiana Cockfight," by Nitzinger and some song by the band County Medical Examiners. We also had a block of classical in the afternoon (interrupted by the aforementioned County Medical Examiners) and a block of rap in the 4:00 hour. Still played several country songs during the day, but folks mostly wanted to see how much they could mess with us.

Thanks to Tom Wood at Magic for his help in securing an AC/DC song that our rock stations in VA Beach and Carbondale, IL didn't have; AC/DC, like the Beatles and Zep, refuse to play along with iTunes, Napster and the other download services. They will someday, I'm sure. And of course, thanks to the listeners who made the pledges - and former KVOM owner Stan Willis, who said he had so much fun listening that day that he would match a portion of the funds raised.
