Youngstown OH Rock PD Takes Over WROV PD Gig

In what we at Ohio Media Watch believe is an exclusive at this late hour of the night:

<a target="_blank" href=http://ohiomedia.blogspot.com/2006/03/exclusive-cumulusyoungstown-programmer.html>http://ohiomedia.blogspot.com/2006/03/exclusive-cumulusyoungstown-programmer.html</a>

Quoting, umm, myself here:

"OMW hears it's official: Matt Spatz, program director/morning driver at Cumulus Youngstown market rocker 'Rock 104' (WWIZ/103.9 Mercer PA), is headed south for a new PD gig in Roanoke VA.

Matt is taking over the programming reins of Clear Channel rock WROV/96.3, the Roanoke/Lynchburg market's dominant rock station ('The Rock of Virginia'). He takes the opening left by Aaron Roberts, who transferred to program Clear Channel Toledo rocker WIOT/104.7."

If I recall correctly, isn't Rock 104 much more active leaning than 'ROV? 96.3 is basically 90% classic rock during dayparts.

I would have thought a classic rock PD would be more appropriate. Still though, I think Matt will do quite well in the 540/434, as long as he doesn't call soda 'pop'. I don't know what it is about people in the Rust Belt, but I have yet to hear a native call a can of Coke 'soda'.

Heh. That'd be MY problem.

My very first day in the Roanoke Valley, I stopped at the local Kroger to get one of those loyalty cards. As I filled out my form and asked the cashier a question, she said, and I quote:

"You ain't from around here, are y'all?"

Direct quote. I swear.

:D

I don't know much about Rock 104's music mix, as I'm nowhere near the station's signal (I'm about 30-40 miles too far west).

ah, that seems to be the common phrase that comes from the locals mouths. I asked a woman at a convenience store for a sack, instead of a bag, and she said the same thing.

looking forward to seeing what Matt can do with WROV, he's got big shoes to fill considering they are numero uno in the market right now.

I don't know Matt very well, but he seems to be a good guy and he's well liked over in Y-Town.

Format exlusivity will make his job easier. No Active or Alt rock will help also.

that's very true. he's not "competing" with anyone, so his focus is just to keep attracting the men from the market.

Anybody know if WWIZ has a replacement for Matt? What board would that be discussed on anyway? Pittsburgh? Cleveland? Thanks in advance.

Youngstown radio is primarily discussed on the Cleveland board.
