Your 2009 Want List

My want list is quite simple:

1. An end to IBOC on AM

Oh, you ain't kiddin. It's so annoying and it spreads beyond just the adjacent frequencies. If WDAE 620 ever decides to use it at night as well as the day, I can forget about ever getting KFI.

I'll echo wishing for an end to IBOC. Additionally from Houston I want to hear:
- KFI.
- WMVP.
- WJR. It never seems to make it here and I sort of miss hearing it at least on occasion, seeing as how it is a blaster in Ohio.

WJR is still good station, but it was one of the great stations not so long ago, with J. P. McCarthy setting the standard for me at least. Hope you are able to hear it at least once this year.

And I assumed getting KFI at night in Houston was a given. Interesting how I can't get it in Tampa and you can't even get it where you are but there are many reports, including my own personal experience, of hearing it much further to the east in the more northern locations.

Another station I'd like to hear is KNBR from San Francisco. They have an impressive daytime coverage even on land, so it should also really get out at night. I wonder how far it can be heard in the daytime out in the Pacific.

I don't have too much hope of getting it here in Florida because of other stations on the same frequency, including a weak local that's very faint at night. There are some times where all the usual stations heard here on 680 get very weak and that's when I would hope KNBR would maybe peek through.

kNBR in tampa would be impossible for 2 reasons, 1) the spanish station in St Pete, 2) WPTF in Raleigh is directional to the south.

Also, Way too much spanish interference to ever dream of getting KFI in addition to WVLG in the villages even though their sinal is weak at night.

I used to be able to get KFI & KNBR in the Chicago area. KNBR only on Monday mornings when then 670 WMAQ was off for maintenance. That doesn't happen anymore and with 670's IBOC I don't even try.
As for KFI they used to be an almost everynight catch here in the 70s & 80s.
I've tried since they've installed their new tower, but no luck yet. It will be much tougher now with 640 much more cluttered around here.

From where I am in North Tampa, the weak Spanish station from St. Pete goes away when I turn the radio to just the right position, aiming it in a northwest/southeast direction. That would almost put the station from Raleigh at the most unfavorable position for reception too, allowing for more to be heard coming from the northwest of where I am.

The same goes with the Spanish station on 640 which I can greatly reduce by facing the radio west northwest. The music station in the villages will come and go but it's easy to identify because of their music format. During the times when both the Spanish station and WVLG are at their weak cycles is still the opportunity to hear something else that could come in on the frequency.

This is the reason I DX with a directional AM receiver such as the Walkman, rather than one that takes in signals from all directions at once.

When in SW Fla, I take an occasional shot at 660 Window Rock AZ, 770 Alb, NM, or 640 L.A. So far, no go. Furthest I've gotten is KSL. But I'm only an occasional DXer.

The nighttime signals of KTNN 660 and KKOB 770 aren't aimed in our direction, so I wouldn't even worry about those two. I'm still looking for KSL but haven't been able to ID anything as of yet. I can sometimes get "something" but nothing strong enough.

There's so much darned Spanish-language interference that KFI is not necessarily a given. DXing in this area is not much fun because of that. Stations most people can get even in the northern part of this state are anything but a given down here.
In addition, KFI only recently bumped back up to full power. They may be receivable here, and in fact I'm sure they are, but I personally have never heard KFI over the air except for when I was in Vegas about three years ago. There it's a local at night.

I've snagged KKOB a couple of times in Fla. Used to be relatively easy to pick it up in the evening before they went to their nighttime pattern. Not sure how do-able it would be these days, but my guess is if you tried often enough, you could eventually find it in the slop somewhere.

Re; Reply 29 from gar- I snagged KSL once again from a location about 75 mi due S of Tampa-the radio is an old Bose Wave with just and ave tuner at best so getting KSL should be possible-I get/confirm the calls by listening just before and just after the hour. I did get a new station on 680 usually dominated by Raleigh. it's KKYX in San Antonio.
Chi-Cleve-Detroit etc. have been coming in. Even got WOWO albeit weak.
But no 660 and 770 from out West but getting 680 San Antonio means it is remotely possible.
Maybe the wish list should include a better radio...

I hadn't considered listening at just that right time when it's getting dark there and they are still on daytime power. I'll have to try it.

One thing that made me never think of listening for KKOB was because of WABC and the Spanish stations.

I have to be more patient listening for KSL because I think I mentioned earlier there's something there and I can't ID it because the signal hasn't gotten strong enough to hear specific words.

Got Houston 740 for the 1st time from SW Fla, stuff has been real strong from Texas lately but 770 is buried by Spanish language stations and occasionally WABC.
KKOB where are you??

740 Houston and 1530 Harlingen used to put in the most reliable nighttime signals into southern Mexico most nights in the 60s & 70s. Also KTRH had a very good daytime signal into New Orleans during those years especially in the winter.

Speaking of daytime signals, I'd be curious to see if any of those stations mentioned, 740 in Houston and 1530 could be heard right on the Gulf coast here in central Florida during the day. I'm 15 to 20 miles inland and I can get WWL New Orleans during the day and it would be better if 860 WGUL didn't spill over. When I ever get the chance, I have to make a trip over to Clearwater beach and check it out. I notice from the frequency listing guide, there's also a non directional station on 1030 from Corpus Christi too. I'd also like to know if there are any strong Mexican stations, especially from the Yucatan, that I could search for. I can't seem to find the same kind of online listing for Mexican stations as I have for ours in the US and Canada.

KCRA (i think) 1030 Corpus is doable at the SW Fla beaches and certainly in the hour or so preceeding local sunset. Same thing for a lot of the e-banders from Texas as well as an 1190 (i think) out of the dallas area.
One good and rare catch was 560 Beaumont from the ocala Fl area about 1 hr after local sunrise.
But winter is the silly season for AM..

OK, this afternoon I was able to make it over to Honeymoon Island right out on the Gulf. I had hoped to get there earlier but was running late and got there right after 5:30 and the sun was still up. WWL from New Orleans was MUCH stronger than back in Tampa. Even 860 WGUL from Dunedin only a couple miles away didn't interfere much. I decided to get out of the car and walk out to the beach with my walkman so I could get more directional reception and it was so cold because of the wind off the Gulf where the water temp is only in the mid 50s. So, I decided to try for 740 KTRH from Houston. The Spanish station from Orlando was dominating but I could hear what sounded like news or talk in the back, especially when I aimed the radio in the direction of where Houston is but I couldn't hear anything specific. I then tried for 1030 KCRA from Corpus Christi. That too was dominated by a Spanish station but I could faintly hear an English speaking station too that was received the strongest when I aimed the radio in the right direction. I wish it wasn't so cold and windy and I wasn't pressed for time with the limit of daylight because I could have checked it out longer.

This thread is making me want to head down to the beach at Galveston today and see what I can do!
Just last night I was thinking to myself how muddy the AM band sounded. This was around 9:30 p.m. CT and hardly anything was coming well outside the locals and KRLD. There was even a hint of garble under KTRH when there was a moment of silence on the frequency. I probably just need to DX later!
